School Leadership Snowy River Campus

Crawling through wild caves in the bushland surrounding the Snowy River is all in a day’s work for Jack.

Jack, who has cerebral palsy and usually walks aided by crutches, let nothing get in his way during a recent stay at the School for Student Leadership’s Snowy River Campus in Marlo.

Thanks to an all-terrain wheelchair, lent generously to him by Josh and Carla Puglisi at Cape Conran, Jack was able to fully participate in the 5-week leadership program, including joining students commando crawling through Wilsons Cave and exploring the bushland.

“Caving was amazing,” Jack said. “It was hard – but fantastic to overcome those challenges. I’ve never done anything like it.”

Jack, who attends Wanganui Park Secondary College in Shepparton, got fantastic support during his time in Snowy River, where he has had the support of his friends and colleagues to achieve nearly every outdoor activity and challenge on offer.

Principal Mark Reeves said Buchan Caves provided an outstanding opportunity in an amazing area to explore aspect of the outdoors, the wild caves like Wilsons and the live caves like Fairy and Royal.

“What made this experience even more amazing was the way Parks Victoria enabled one of our students, Jack, to participate. Parks Officers went out of their way to ensure Jack had the same experience of other students,” he said.

“Jack was able to commando crawl into Wilsons Cave and slide through some of the tightest and squeeziest holes and formations as his colleagues.”

The School for Student Leadership runs unique leadership camps for Year 9 students from across the state that last from five to 10 weeks, and the Snowy Campus is celebrating its 10th year this year.

Many Wanganui Park Secondary students have benefited over the years by attending Alpine, Gnurad-Gundidj or Snowy campus. The school has a strong focus on student leadership and inclusion.

The current cohort living and learning at the Snowy River Campus is from Braybrook, Footscray, Melton and Wanganui, and are in the last days of their five-week experience.

“Many are reluctant to leave,” Mr Reeves said. “It is a life-changing experience.”

Students at the Snowy River Campus of the School for Student Leadership are used to hard outdoor challenges and getting cold, wet and dirty. Many local residents will have seen them and staff on expeditions on the Snowy, surfing all year round and walking the beaches around Conran.

The Snowy River Campus wishes to thank and acknowledge the outstanding work of Parks Victoria to make this activity accessible and a true learning experience for all.

VCE Arts Exhibition

The VCE Arts Exhibition is on this Friday 14th October! Everyone is welcome to join us in the Senior Learning Centre at 6pm to see work created by our VCE Art, Studio Arts and Vis-Comm students.

The exhibition will include work by students completing Studio Arts Ceramics, Studio Arts Glass, Studio Arts Photography, Art and Visual Communication. Our special guest will be Arts Education guru, Max Darby. There will be light refreshments, performances by music students and presentations recognising outstanding work.

We will be accepting gold coin donations at the door, to help cover the cost of the exhibition.

We look forward to seeing you there.

2016 Graduation

This year's Year 12 students will finish up their school year with a Valedictory Dinner on Wednesday 19th October, followed by a Graduation Ceremony to be held in the VISY Centre at 9.00am Thursday 20th October. It's sure to be an excellent couple of events and a great way for the students to farewell the school.

Year 10 Formal

The Year 10 Formal, held at the Emerald Bank Woolshed, was attended by 170 students. The weather was kind. A warm evening with no rain made the night very pleasant. The students looked fabulous in their suits and dresses. They performed three formal dances, which they had learnt at school during lunchtimes, then danced the night away to music provided by a young DJ.

STUDY CLUB FACTS

Study Club is up and running for Term 4.

All students are welcome to attend.

Study Club days are Monday, Tuesday and Thursday.

Session times are from 3.20p.m till 5p.m

The venue is the library.

Students can stay for as long as they like.

Sign in and sign out book at the front desk.

Afternoon tea provided.

Supervised by two or more staff.

Study Club provides an opportunity to help meet all due dates.

One-to-one assistance available.

Attendance at Study Club has resulted in improved outcomes.
