News from the Library

Did you happen to see the picture of Mr Murphy with wings on the front of the last newsletter? Those wonderful wings were made out of paper feathers decorated by many, many students and staff from around the college. Each feather has something unique on it – poetry, cartoons, digital art, tattoo art, words of inspiration … - each one a reflection of the artist’s place in the college and their hopes. It is hoped that the experiences the students have at Wantirna College will help them “find their wings”. Come into the Library, find your feather, and maybe get your photo taken in front of it!

Thanks to everyone who contributed a feather, to the Design team who helped cut some of them out and to Jaryd Hammant and Constanze Hau who helped put the wings together.

Last term the year 8s had fun in the Library producing Gothic poetry in groups of about four where they could not see the line produced by the previous student. Some of the results were hilarious and strange but often there were some wonderful lines such as “I transmit this pain into despair” or “and there was screaming on the wind”.

Below is a gothic progression poem by Niamh, Michelle, Tim and Adelaide of Year 8.

Dripping, dribbling, weeping

Creak, creak, creeping

A knock upon a heavy door

Finally blood drips to the floor

Black eyes, sweet, lies, nothing means anything anymore

But there is death waiting at the door

The words it says, nevermore

We are continually looking for new ideas on how to improve the Library. Earlier in the year we surveyed students and staff for their input and have been having meetings which include student participation but we are also interested in hearing from the wider community (different layout, new technology, more books?). Please send any ideas to kha@wantirnacollege.vic.edu.au

Karlene Hall and the Library team
