Boys' Hockey
Another successful morning for our under 16 teams commenced Round 2 for us last weekend. Both teams recorded strong victories and, pleasingly, many of the younger players came to the fore.
Mrs Winter Cooke’s Gold team were well led by Dougal Sweeney, who scored four of the goals, but Clancy Munro, Tobe Adamson, Jack Wall, Owen Priestley and debutante Ned McArthur all showed real promise and determination. Reagan Simons provided strong side-line support and gave his team good encouragement and advice in a largely non-playing role this week.
With Mrs Nichols absent due to injury, Blue recorded a 6-0 victory over demons-Coleraine. Ferg Roberts and Harrison (or Harry, as his teammates are calling him) Hocking each bagged a brace whilst Eren Zehir and James Sutherland scored one goal each. Tane Nelson provided effective skilled play in midfield and Euan Sutherland, Max Green, Charles Cain and Harrison Hocking caught the eye. Hamish Cameron worked hard too. I challenged a number of the boys to focus on their skills and to avoid using big hits. Sharing game time caused some confusion over positions so the standard of play deteriorated a little as the game proceeded.
At Open level, the Men’s team played Demons. This was a close and very competitive match. Demons led for a large part of the first half before Captain Thomas Verco scored in the final minutes of the half with a superb corner hit. Tom Bunge’s fine goal after a run into the circle gave us the lead early in the second half and Tom Verco added another – this time from a penalty stroke – to complete the scoring. At times, some excellent hockey was on display but there was plenty of pressure and I was particularly pleased by the way the boys kept their composure. This was a time when “excellent team effort” applies – but the Captain stood out for the way he controlled the game and Jake Musson, Tom Dufty and Sami Zehir all played very well.
Suddenly, two weeks have gone by and we are well and truly into the season. Please note that Under 16 training will always be at 3.45pm on Wednesdays and the Men will train at 4.45pm.

District Athletics
At the beginning of Term 2, College was represented at District Athletics in Warrnambool by four Year 6 Students – Jack Austin, Phoebe Russell, Ella Churchill and Lachlan Rees. All of them put in an amazing effort and showed the skill of our young, up and coming athletes and their willingness to put themselves up against some of the best athletes in our district. Below is a breakdown of the events they competed in and the outcome of each.
Ella Churchill:
- 5th in 200m
- 5th in hurdles
- 4th in high jump
Lachlan Rees:
- 5th in hurdles
- 5th in shot put
Jack Austin
- 7th in 800m
Phoebe Russell
- 9th in 800m
We would also like to congratulate Lachlan Rees for being selected to go to the State Swimming Championships in Melbourne the second week of Term 2. It is an incredible achievement to be able to compete at such a high level and we are very proud of Lachlan representing College and putting his best foot forward. He competed in both the 50m Butterfly event as well as the 50m freestyle and placed 7th and 8th respectively. Well done Lachlan!
House Cross Country
There is a captains’ report including results in this edition of the newsletter but well done to all the students who competed in the House X-C on Tuesday and gave their best. Big thanks also to all the staff who ensured the smooth running and safety of the students doing their various jobs on the day. Special mention to Mr Clare for all the results and sticker production.
Congratulations to Laidlaw who once again took out the overall aggregate in another sporting event in 2017 and we now look forward to a successful GD Cross Country on Friday 12th May.
Cross Country Report
It was a cold day for the House Cross Country, however, soon after the start of the race the sun came out, making the run more pleasant for all. Coming out on top was Laidlaw House who won by a clear margin. Young finished second followed by Berry, Learmonth finishing fourth. The cold weather didn’t stop some excellent Individual times. Sam Crawford was fastest 12-14 year boy running 3 km with a time of 11.31 minutes. Niamh Sutherland was the faster girl running 3km in 12.48 minutes. Harris Jennings was the fastest 15-21 boy running 4.2 km in 14.18 minutes.

Football
Yesterday saw some of our footballers compete in the Division 2 Yr 9/10 Bob Templeton Shield. As reigning premiers of this shield the team gave their all on the day and represented the school extremely well but unfortunately came up just 1 point shy of retaining the shield!
We had a young team that included 5 Year 8 footballers but we started the day with a great win against Heywood by 20points. Another solid performance against Good Sheperd/Balmoral saw us come away with a 26point victory. Bayview College tested the boys hunger to win and with a last minute goal to Harrison Bright we escaped with a 2point victory.
This meant that a win in our final game against Casterton would mean an undefeated day and being crowned the overall champions. The whole game was a goal for goal affair throughout but despite having opportunities to score a winning goal the team went down by the smallest of margins – 1 point!
This resulted in the side coming 2nd overall on the day. All players selected performed admirably and contributed at various times towards our impressive performance; however, the outstanding contributor over the 4 games was captain Nicholas Vallance who was awarded the AFL medal as our best player for the day. Special mention to Patrick Burgoyne, Charlie Johnston, Connor Hunter, Jack Sharp and Jackson Hodgetts who were other consistent performers.
ICCES Athletics
The ICCES Athletics competition is fast approaching – Thursday 18th May – and the team members should be attending training sessions held with our coach Rohan Garfoot over the next two weeks to ensure they give themselves and the team the best chance of success.
Basketball Clinics
Last week saw our head basketball coach Josh Kearney take some special coaching clinics for both our players and coaches. Well done to those who attended and demonstrated the passion to improve their skills and knowledge in the game.
