Study Skills session for Year 10 and 11 Students:
On Monday morning in Mentor time the students in these year levels came to the Simons Auditorium to hear a presentation called Step to Success. The session focused on study skills and techniques and built on previous How to Study and Academic Leadership sessions run by the Library. If you are interested to know what was said, and would like to build on the concepts with your child, you can see a condensed version here.
Victorian Premiers’ Reading Challenge:
The vital statistics are sitting at:
- 112 Registered for the Challenge
- 3 have officially completed
- 50 have logged at least 1 book
- 392 books have been finished
- 156 books have been verified
Verification is now the critical step. I will only verify the books that have been logged if a parent advises me that the books have been read. This can be done via email or a written note. The Challenge web site closes in early September so all our work needs to be complete by the end of August. Having the logged books verified is the only way for them to count.
Wellness week:
Like the rest of the Senior School, we are offering special events this week. These are daily challenges with Strawbees and Planks, as well as our Mindfulness colouring making its 2017 debut.
Monday’s amazing conga line made its way through the building, led by the indomitable Tom Stratmann. Unfortunately, they were moving fast so all my photographs were very blurry. I will do some editing and get something up on the blog, along with the fantastic multi-age activity in the Minecraft session being run by Mr Steer and Jarman Oakley in our IT room. The blog post is here.
University Visits:
In recent weeks Mrs. Manifold has had visitors from a number of universities calling in to address our senior students. Representatives from University of Melbourne, Uni South Australia, LaTrobe, and Deakin have talked with students about options for study and accommodation. It always amazes me how readily the university staff give time, and I am disappointed that more of our Year 12 students don’t make coming in for a chat one of their priorities. In terms of getting into accommodation, chances increase significantly if students have introduced themselves during one of these meetings. Monash Uni, Longerenong College and RIST will also be visiting in the coming weeks.
