The Peppercorns 10s & 11s

Fireside Chat

It was lovely to see so many of you attend the Fireside Chat on Monday 10 February 2020. Rosie and I hope that we addressed any questions or concerns that you had and that you left feeling content and assured.

As promised, we have uploaded the Peppercorns Indicative Timetable for Term One as a PDF onto Compass. You will find it on the News Feed. For those of you who were unable to attend the Fireside Chat feel free to get in contact with Rosie or myself if you have any questions or concerns.

Parent login details for SeeSaw were distributed on the night and for those that didn’t receive this, we have distributed the remaining ones out to your children to bring home. Please ask them for it. SeeSaw is a great platform we use whereby you can get an insight into the happenings of the classroom.

Unit of Inquiry -

How the World Works

This term, we are focusing on the following transdisciplinary theme: How the World Works. We are looking through the conceptual lenses of ‘causation’ and ‘connection’. The children spent most of Week Two experimenting with wooden planks and how they can make objects such as a toy car or marble move using these wooden planks.

Their constructions and ideas were very interesting to say the least and they prompted great discussion about motion, speed, gravity and friction. Other 'hooks' such as the Felix Baumgartner’s Space Jump video and ‘Did the bears move overnight?’ discussion sparked lots of curiosity as well. Ask them about it!

By Week Three, the children had a good sense of what our inquiry unit was about: Forces. They seem pretty excited and engaged about embarking on this unit. Together, we developed the following lines of inquiry:

  • An inquiry into forces and motion;
  • An inquiry into how forces impact objects; and,
  • An inquiry into how our understanding of forces and motion help us with design and innovation.

We are excited about where this Unit of Inquiry will take us. There is a lot of fun to be had. As part of their assessment, students will write a short piece about their understanding at the end of the unit and develop a central idea. It will be interesting to see how similar their central ideas are to the one Rosie and I have developed.
