Library News

In the Primary Library last week, we saw the Year 5 and 6 classes commence Guided Inquiry units with Mrs Wilson.  These units have been collaboratively planned with the class teachers.  The aim of the sessions is to help embed information literacy skills and technology into a unit that supports work done in class.  The Year 5/6 and 6 classes will be using their class novel to generate a book trailer.  The boys will need to think about the themes presented in the book and use visual imagery, audio, and captions to promote the book.  The year 5 class are undertaking a study of Roald Dahl.  Using a selection of his novels the boys will examine elements of his work (humour – use of language, characterisation, settings etc.)  They will then look at visual representations of these to compare and contrast.  The unit will culminate in a performance of The Wonderful World of Roald Dahl.

Week 3 also saw the ELC children meet with their primary buddy for their library sessions.  Fortnightly, the older boys help facilitate borrowing and spend time reading and engaging with the children from the early learning centre.  This is an enriching program for all children involved.

We again embark on the Premier’s Reading Challenge.  This week all students from the primary school were given Premier’s Reading Challenge sheets.  They are expected to read 12 books by the end of August.  (8 of these titles need to have an age appropriate sticker on them.)  Please note Junior Primary students will be completing most of this task in class.  This is a good way to ensure the boys are reading for pleasure, so you support with this initiative is appreciated.

The Senior Library has also began introducing the Premier’s Reading Challenge this year to the middle school students. For Year 7 students they are required to read 8 books from the PRC booklist, and 4 of their own choosing (which may or may not be on the PRC booklists) while Years 8-9 need to read 4 books from the PRC booklists and 8 of their own choosing. For more information: http://www.premiersreadingchallenge.sa.edu.au/prc/pages/home/home/?reFlag=1 here you can read the rules, requirements and search for which books are listed on the challenge. Please note a member of the library team or class teacher must sign off all books listed on the form for it to be admissible.

We are hoping that the new student ID cards will be available within the next week. Students will be informed via the daily bulletin of collection times.

Finally, we celebrated Library Lovers Day on the 14th of February with a display of books emphasising the different themes we can love (humour, thriller, weird) and a special bookmark for all the school staff to show that libraries love them too.
