Mock Job Interviews

Year 9 students were given the opportunity to apply for ‘Mock Jobs’ to give them a realistic experience of job search and work experience preparation. Students completed online applications for one of the positions advertised including: Mock McDonald’s, Mock Boost Juice, Mock Bunnings, Mock Hoyts, Mock Kmart and Mock Puffing Billy. Year 9's after investigating one job created job, resumes and cover letters. They were then coached on interview skills and participated in a job interview with a member of the local business community.

Students reflected on the Mock Job Experience.

Michael Tommey, Teacher

The mock job interview was a great experience which allowed me to gain experience and knowledge of future job interviews. I have gained confidence by expressing my ideas to the interviewer and learned how to present myself well.

Isa Olsen, Student

The mock interview program was a lot less stressful than I thought it would be. It taught me various life skills like how to write a resume, a cover letter and how to act in a real interview. The interview was fun and overall a great learning experience.

Re-connecting in Religion

On May 22, 90 students in the Year 10 RAS class visited The Jewish Museum in Alma Road, St Kilda and then the Dandenong Mosque in Cleeland Street.

This was an exercise in understanding different faiths to break down misunderstandings.

The students have been studying the nine aspects of all religions and were able to identify them in both the Synagogue and the Mosque.

In both places, we were warmly welcomed and made to feel a part of a universal family.

Building Bridges

On June 14, two Youth Workers from the Dandenong Council, Mo and Catherine, attended the CSYMA class to inform them of the many programs available for the youth of the Dandenong region.  The council is working with our class to create a project to develop social cohesion and tolerance of religious difference.  Over the next few months, we will be working together to create this project.  Stay tuned as we update you with journal entries of this exciting new venture.

Development in Design

Visual Communication Design is a VCE study that explores the way information and ideas are communicated through the use of visual imagery and text. This semester’s Year 11 students have had the opportunity to explore a range of drawing styles and design principles with impressive results. Through both manual and digital techniques they have used their creativity and design talent to develop concepts and create posters for a variety of different purposes.

Improving in Italian

In Year 8 Italian, students have researched products made in Italy and then compared two different Italian products/brands using different comparative forms. For example, they described and compared Gucci and Prada, Lamborghini and Alfa Romeo, and even Pizza and Tiramisu’! Some classes were even able to taste test the famous Italian Baci chocolate! Buonissimo!

In Year 9 Italian,  in unit on Florence, students researched an Italian Renaissance painting and needed to provide the title, name of artist, description including meaning or story and the reason for choosing it. An enjoyable activity which produced a number of excellent presentations!

Grazie mille!

Australian Catholic Youth Festival

Attention Students in Years 9, 10 and 11:  on 8th-10th December this year, young people from all over Australia will be gathering in Perth for the Australian Catholic Youth Festival.  Following is a link to the website where you can learn more about the Festival.  https://youthfestival.catholic.org.au/

We are inviting 20 young people to attend the Festival in Perth.  If this is something you would like to be involved with please email me and indicate your interest.  The School and Catholic Education Office will cover ¾ of the registration price which includes accommodation, air fares and some meals.  Therefore, you would need to commit to paying the last quarter of the cost which is approximately $420.00.  We are happy to organise payment plans if the cost becomes an issue.

This may be an ideal event for students who are keen to undertake leadership positions in the College in the next couple of years.  I look forward to hearing from any interested students.
