Year 2, 3 & 6 News

Year 2 Science with Mrs Graham

To support their current Unit of Inquiry ‘Sharing the Planet’ with the central idea ‘Living things go through a process of change', last week the Year 2 students had the opportunity to investigate ‘Minibeasts’ in the Science Room with Mrs Graham.

Students used the electronic microscope and other magnifying equipment to recognise the common features of stick insects, centipedes, slaters and meal worms. There was a great deal of excitement and amazement to appreciate how small but detailed these minibeasts are up close!

Year 3 Science - How the World Works

The Year 3 students have been busy learning about the Science/Engineering Design Process in Science this week. They participated in four Inquiry rotations to investigate and create The Tallest Tower, a Crutches Carrier, Paper Planes and Parachutes.

They had a wonderful time working in groups and following the design process to create their product.

Creative Space Incursion (Year 3)

On Tuesday 30 July the Year 3 students participated in a 'Creative Space Incursion to support their 'How the World Works' Unit of Inquiry.

Students were challenged to use their critical thinking, problem solving and creative design skills to answer a series of STEM based challenges.

Working in teams throughout the day, they built products and prototypes, working to tight timelines. They learnt how to harness and develop their creativity, build resilience, and develop skills in working effectively in a team.

STUDENT REFLECTIONS

The highlight of the incursion for me was getting to invent something with a group and getting to use cool materials  I learnt that it is not easy to make things in a group because it’s not just your ideas that you have to include. I liked how it was challenging. Clementine C (3A)

The highlight for me was working in a team.  I learnt how to work with people I do not know. Lucy G (3A)

My highlight of the incursion was making a human computer. It was a lot of fun. I learnt to have great teamwork and that you need to share everyone’s ideas. You have to be patient and show respect. Annabel P (3A)

The highlight of the incursion was making our own invention in a group. We got set challenges that we got to do. It felt like we were really good inventors. It was difficult but really fun. Charlotte R (3A)

The highlights for me were that the challenges weren’t too easy, they were challenging. I learnt that you can use things out of their original purpose. Amelia H (3B)

I have learnt that working in a group is really important and it gets you ready for life. I have learnt that when things get challenging in life you never stop trying. We respected our group members. Evie C (3B)

Year 6 Wellbeing Program

Last term the Year 6 students commenced a 10 week gender specific wellbeing program. 'Girls on the Go! is a program for young women that promotes positive body image, self-esteem and healthy lifestyles. 'Rock & Water' aims to assist boys in their development to adulthood and to become young men who are conscious of their own power and responsibility within society.

As part of the ‘Enjoying Physical Activity’ component, the students participated in a Hip Hop class (boys last week, girls today!).

The students have very much enjoyed the fruit, cheese and crackers at the end of each session!
