Regional Swimming Finals
The Eastern Metropolitan Regional Swimming Finals were held at Aquanation on 26 March 2019.
In the 14-year age group SOC was represented by five year 8 boys across three separate events. Aryan Patel got off to a smooth start in his 50m Butterfly event, but was unable to hold his strong lead and finished 8th in the region.
Kohen Umezu swam a PB time of 36.72 seconds, earning him second place in his 50m Breast stroke event.
Rory Brady, Lochlan Eker, Jae Jeon and Kohen Umezu swam in the freestyle relay. Kohen was able to put the boys in front with his flawless start. Second swimmer Lochlan was able to keep the boys in the top three with his speedy effort. Rory and Jae both swam powerfully to finish the relay in the fifth place in the region.
The boys tried their best and worked well as a team, cheering each other throughout the whole event and next year hope to improve on this placing.

Year 7/8 Boys Baseball
On Monday 1 April the South Oakleigh Year 7/8 Boys Baseball group travelled to Napier Park, Glen Waverley, to participated in the Monash Division Baseball match. We competed against Wellington, John Monash and Brentwood and had one outstanding win and two losses.
At the start we lacked good communication but as the games continued, the play became smoother.
Special commendation to Jackson Davey for hitting a home run, and to Ace Esquivel for all-round support of other team members.

Year 7/8 Boys Volleyball
From the first training session after school it was obvious this group of students had a great vibe and willingness to work with each other. It did not take much to get them playing, sorting themselves into teams and supporting each other to improve their skills. James Ryan, their coach, did a wonderful job keeping them on task.
Once we boarded the bus and headed out to Springers in Keysborough our teams were organised and ready to perform. With a mix of wins and losses on the day the boys felt good that they delivered a strong performance, despite not making it through to the next round. It was pleasing to see their teamwork and communication improving with each game, not to mention their strong sense of sportsmanship throughout the day.
When students were not playing they cheered and supported each other from the sidelines. The sense of connectedness was overwhelming, and I left the day feeling proud of our boys.

YEAR 7/8 Boys Cricket
On Monday April 1 I had the pleasure of taking the year 7/8 boys to Lum Reserve for Interschool Cricket.
The following students represented SOC at the Monash Division Inter School Sport Competition:
Adhvik Balachandar
Krish Bhardwaj
Sanchit Dhingra
Neel Gera
Rafan Haq
Daniel Klimek
Sean Maisey
Muhammad Nauman
Cooper Oshea
Priyansh Patel
Jesse Sadjoli
Harjot Singh
Tanay Malge
James Summers
The boys played well, incorporating our school values of teamwork, respect and responsibility. They negotiated the batting order responsibly, sometimes sacrificing the final result so as to involve all team players.
Even though the boys lost this round of competition they gained valuable experience by being part of a team. Cooper did an exceptional job organising and running the event.
Well done to all our cricketers.

Senior Girls soccer
On Tuesday 7 May South Oakleigh participated in the inter-school Senior Girls Soccer competition. To say we had an amazing day would be an understatement! From the bus trip there to the bus trip back, we were so upbeat.
We versed three other schools: John Monash, Wellington and Brentwood and won all of our games through team work, encouragement and persistence.
GAME 1: JOHN MONASH (2-0)
GAME 2: WELLINGTON (4-1)
GAME 3: BRENTWOOD (6-0)
Each game we played, we bonded and grew stronger. Not just as a team, but as friends too. We are so proud as to how far we came in that one day, and even prouder when the adjudicator for the event announced us as the winners of the competition. He wished us luck for the next round, at regional, and we were above ecstatic.
I have no doubt the whole team will take on this challenge in the most positive manner and no matter what the outcome, we should all be proud of ourselves.
