Sustainability

Jane from CERES Evironmental Park came to our school to conduct a litter audit with some of our Preps and Year 5 students. We checked the bins from the Prep learning community, the staffroom, and outside to discover how much rubbish we had and if it is going in the right bins.

The students tipped the rubbish out of the bins and used tongs to sort it into the right bins They found a lot of rubbish in the wrong bins. If we don’t put the rubbish in the right bins it just goes to landfill, a big hole in the ground. At school we have colours on the bins and posters to help us know which bin to put our rubbish in.

The students also learnt that when food goes to landfill it can create greenhouse gases. Food scraps should go in a compost bin or worm farm. The compost can then be used in the garden. At school we have a compost bin and a worm farm.

In one bin the students found 2 kilograms of icypole wrappers. We are going to collect the icypole wrappers in the canteen and take them to Redcycle so that they can be recycled into outdoor furniture.

When we put our rubbish in the right bins we will all help our environment.
