Firstly, we would like to welcome our staff and students back to school after a well-deserved – and much needed – break. Term 1 is a busy, fast-paced and exciting time for the Ringwood Secondary College community and we are pleased to report that it was a smooth success. For our Year 7 students, Term 1 was a whirlwind of new information and new experiences; these young people have now completely transitioned into high school students and we trust that their holidays were decorated with feelings of triumph and satisfaction, as well as with plenty of rest. For our Year 8 students, the sprint of Term 1 felt fairly familiar to them, but was enjoyed with a well-earned sense of confidence and accomplishment as these students reflected on just how far they have come over the past 12 months.
The end of the term saw our Year 7 students being involved in a number of rewarding incursions aimed at further supporting them in their academic endeavours as well as strengthening their sense of belonging within the school. The team from Elevate Education visited to share some key study skills, an experience which both our Year 7 students and their teachers found valuable. It is essential that young learners begin adopting positive and effective study habits early in their education, not only for the academic benefits but also to support their mental health and wellbeing as they move through school.
As a celebration of their transition, the cohort gathered together to watch “Wonder” on the last day of term. One of our Year 7 Ambassadors, Quinn Hansen (7A), shared his thoughts about the film (spoiler alert!):
“It is a very good movie. I really like when Auggie wins the medal at the end and all his friends support him. It also has a message – it’s about why people shouldn’t bully others… it’s about respect…that it doesn’t matter what you look like on the outside, but what you’re like on the inside.”
Once again, we would like to congratulate the new Year 7s on their fantastic start to secondary college.
Our Year 8 students have reunited themselves with schooling life confidently and efficiently. As Coordinators, we have proudly observed our Year 8 students voluntarily and informally taking on mentoring roles to Year 7 students around the grounds, offering guidance and support in a range of circumstances. At RSC, we aim to instil in our students values of respect and comradery, and these have shone through our Year 8 so far in 2018.
Our Year 8 students have had a very active first term, with House Activities, Bike Ed, and Interschool Sports being some of the highlights. One of the most notable moments of Term 1 is certainly the Geography Field Trip, where students were able to visit several places along the Yarra River to turn their river studies theory into practice. Reports from staff and students comment on the lovely weather, the impeccable organisation and the interesting and valuable learning experience that is embedded in this excursion. Well done to all involved – we hope to see students continue taking these opportunities to extend their knowledge outside the classroom.
Finally, we would like to remind families that students are to attend school in full Winter Uniform for the duration of Terms 2 and 3. You may have read the update on Compass Newsfeed regarding socks as part of the uniform: “plain white socks are the regulation uniform for all students, summer and winter. In winter, short black socks may only be worn under black tights with the winter skirt if desired.” If, for any reason, a student must come to school out-of-uniform, we ask that they bring a signed note from home so that their House Coordinator can supply them with a uniform pass for the day.
Best wishes to all for a fun and fruitful Term 2.

Middle School
Welcome to Term 2!
As Term 2 begins, there are many upcoming events for the students in Middle School. Year 9 students and parents have already had their interGREAT ‘Personal Project’ expo night on Tuesday 24th of April.
Year 10 students have the METEC excursion coming up in May and before we know it, the exam period will begin in week 9, shortly followed by the Central Australia Trip or Work Experience.
All students should look to effectively manage their coursework and subject workloads. Timely completion of work and adequate preparation for their assessment tasks will assist students greatly in having a successful Term 2!
Uniform
The beginning of Term 2 indicates the uniform changeover period from summer to winter uniform. All students will need to be wearing full winter uniform from the 1st of May. If anyone is unsure of the winter uniform guidelines, please refer to the ‘Student Dress Code Policy’ which is located on the college website.
For any further concerns, please contact the relevant Middle School Coordinator. Thank-you to students and parents for their continued support and abiding by our uniform policy.
Year 10 Central Australia Trip Information Evening
As the 2018 Year 10 Central trip is fast approaching, so too is the information night. This will be held on Wednesday the 2nd of May at 7pm in the library. Both students and parents are required to attend. The information night will be a chance to go over details of the trip, distribute forms (including dietary and medical forms) and for any questions to be answered regarding the trip. Look forward to seeing you there!

The Shrine of Remembrance
“On the 20th of April, the student leaders of Year 9 and 10 represented Ringwood Secondary College at the 87th Legacy Student Memorial at the Melbourne Shrine of Remembrance for the 103rd ANZAC Day.
We heard from some very inspiring young student leaders and the Governor of Victoria Linda Dessau AC and her company. We witnessed professional marches and services portrayed in the days of war, as well as today’s battles. We payed tribute to the fallen by reciting sayings like Flanders Field, and listened to the Last Post played by a bugle by another student leader.
We are very grateful to partake in such a commemorative service, and are glad to witness such interesting things like the marches.”

InterGREAT
Our InterGREAT Personal Project Parent Expo was a huge success! On Tuesday night, Year 9 students were on hand to showcase their Personal Projects to staff, parents and the wider school community.
Throughout Term 1 students needed to display grit, tenacity, perseverance and resilience in order to overcome obstacles and complete their projects. These are character qualities that each individual needs to thrive.
For the night, the 500’s area was transformed into a gallery full of RSC talent, with students proudly presenting their work. It was a fantastic opportunity for students to interact and engage with an audience. The response and interest from parents was overwhelming! The rooms were abuzz with chatter and enthusiasm. I hope the students found the evening a positive experience, with the school community displaying so much appreciation for their efforts.
Thanks to everyone who participated and made the night such a success!

Martin Heppell from Resilience Project
Martin Heppell gave a presentation to the Year 9 students towards the end of Term 1. Thanks to K’Baw Lwe for her reflection of the session.
“On Friday 16th March, the Year 9 students were very fortunate to have had Martin Heppell from The Resilience Project come and speak to the year level. With Martin’s engaging voice and pace of tone, from the moment he said his first word to the audience, he instantaneously caught the attention of all those who were in the room.
There were a number of subjects that Martin brought up throughout his inspiring, motivating and emotional speech, but one that may associate with not only the year 9’s but many other age group was that “You are enough”. How could anyone who attended Martin’s enriching speech forget about the moment when he brought together the Year 9 cohort into what felt like a big family. This was done by Martin having the students get up and give someone who they know has their back, through thick and thin, a hug.
This was one InterGREAT speaker that many of us will not forget. A massive thankyou to Martin who gave us his time and gave the Year 9’s a speech to remember and to Ms Watson, our interGREAT coordinator for organising each guest speaker.”
