Campus Stories

A Box Office Hit

Cornerstone's production for 2018, A Stiff Necked People was a resounding success.  Audiences were thoroughly entertained by a combination of drama and humour.  The cast worked hard over three days to reach three different groups of people including senior citizens on the Thursday, Busselton's youth groups on the Friday and parents, teachers and friends on the final Saturday performance.  Well done to all sixteen students who were part of this exceptional dramatic experience!

Year 6 Camp @ Camp Mornington

Last week, we (the Year 6 class) were getting our hands dirty orienteering, climbing, rafting and canoeing at Mornington Adventure Camp near Harvey.  On the Monday before camp, we were each given a brand new leather Bible donated by Cornerstone Church.  David Bernabe handed them over on behalf of the church and as a class we discussed how in the words of Psalm 119:105, ‘our Bibles are a lamp to guide our feet and a light to our paths’ on life’s journey.

Mr Rob Adams, from OAC ministries, came down from Perth to share the Word of God with the class. He talked about Jesus, and how His birth, life, death and resurrection were unique. Mr Adams’ presentations all lead up to the same question: Do you believe?

All the students were blessed with amazing meals during our four days on camp (we even had dessert every night!). Another highlight would definitely be zipping through the treetops at night on the Flying Fox.

Together, we defeated our greatest fears as we participated in the daily activities, and felt as if nothing could stop us when our classmates cheered us on. The camp was a truly wonderful experience that I’m sure each Year 6 student will never forget. - Lucy Marden, 2018

Y11 Uni Camp

The Year 11 students had the opportunity to attend a Uni Camp in Perth last week. Students visited the Perth Careers Expo, the University of Notre Dame, Murdoch University, Curtin University and the University of Western Australia. Activities included tours of the universities and the accommodation, a visit to the animal anatomy lab at Murdoch, a health promotion and psychology activity at Curtin, talks about what each university has to offer and entry requirements, and an evening of bowling. We were also able to catch up with some past Cornerstone graduates who shared some of their experiences of transitioning to university in Perth. Here is some feedback from the students:

Uni camp was a great opportunity and it really opened my eyes on what’s out there. Before I went, I thought the atmosphere would be extremely different to what it was. I found it was very relaxed and a positive environment to be in. I was able to see what clubs there are to join (for example at UWA there’s the sausage in a bun appreciation committee), the on campus living arrangements and some of the labs were really interesting. From the karaoke on the bus trips to climbing up and down a million stairs, it was really good to view some of the options available for when I finish school and the ways I could get into Uni.

I benefited from the uni camp as I was able to grow my knowledge on uni life and gained a better understanding and passion for my career after school. Also, spending time with our year group was awesome and all of the hilarious moments we all shared was definitely worth it.

I found that uni camp was a great opportunity to get a chance to envision myself at each uni (how I’d fit in, potential part time jobs in the area, clubs that I could join) and ask plenty of questions to do with the course I’m interested in. Overall, it was a fantastic experience, and I loved every moment, from the karaoke on the bus to considering my future career options.

To me careers camp was a real eye-opener, it answered a lot of questions for me and proved some of my expectations about university life wrong. It gave more meaning to my efforts in high school and provided me with motivation and excitement for my future.

Cows Create Careers 2018

Some young visitors arrived last week! And the Year 7s are enjoying caring for them.

We’re looking forward to seeing the learning that comes from this special experience.  This opportunity for our high school students has, in previous years, seen them win many awards.

Jump Rope 35th Birthday Party

Students from our Dunsborough campus were treated to a wonderful celebration by the Jump Rope for Heart Foundation this week.  Year 2 student, Emma Rechichi, raised over $500 and won the party for her classmates.  An ambassador for Jump Rope for Heart ran the afternoon's event complete with a huge heart cake, prizes and games.  There was much excitement and fun!

Farewell

Our Year 1 Educational Assistant, Vanessa Andreone, has decided to take a wonderful opportunity to move to full time employment, which sadly means leaving our school. Vanessa’s last day with us will be on Wednesday 30th May. We have been blessed to have Vanessa with us over the last five years and appreciated her quiet dedication to the children and our school. Vanessa has always shown her love for all children she has come into contact with and we will miss her lovely manner and commitment to bringing out the best in everyone she works with. We wish Vanessa the very best in her new job.

CYWF - Cornerstone Young Writers Forum

On Thursday 24th May, the writing club had their second gathering! This time featuring a special guest: Jodie How! Mrs. How is a published author who kindly volunteered to attend the latest writing session. We had a relaxed and informal interview where everyone got an opportunity to ask Mrs. How questions about her personal life or writing career.  She even shared a short story she had recently entered in a writing competition about a young girl walking in the forest, when something mysteriously falls from the sky.   Mrs. How shared amazing writing tips based on her experiences. She encouraged the students to never give up, and shared ‘that you only really fail when you stop trying.’  A wonderful message that I hope the students will never forget.
