SCHOOL INFORMATION

SCHOOL LEVIES

I am a parent member of the School Council.  I was previously not aware of the costs of running a school and the financing arrangements required to provide our children with a good education.  The school receives funding from the State Government.  That funding is limited and basically only covers the cost of the school buildings and to pay the wages for the teachers and staff.  Government funding does not give the teachers any budget to provide resources to the class.  Provision of classroom resources (photocopying, stationary, equipment, project items etc) has to be separately funded in addition to what the Government pays.  In order to be able to provide classroom resources, the School Council sets a budget and requests the parents to pay School Council Requested Fees (to provide a general fund for classroom resources) and Elective Fees (to provide additional resources for each elective and vary depending on the cost of resources for each elective).

The State Government requires the school by law to state that the School Council Requested Fee is an “optional” fee but the sad reality is that if families do not pay that fee and the specific Elective Fees the school does not have enough money to provide a full range of classroom resources to our children.

I am proud to acknowledge that most families do pay the School Council Requested Fee and the Elective Fees.  Our voluntary payment rate at MESC is quite high, but there are some families who do not contribute to the funding of school resources and this reduces the ability of the school to provide resources for their children and for all of the school’s students.  The school is very supportive of those families who are in financial difficulties and customised arrangements can be organised for families in need.  However for the small number of families who choose not to pay, I wish you to know (as I now know from being on the School Council) that every student suffers as a result of having diminished resources unless all families contribute to the resource fees.

Government funding provides a very basic level of teaching.  At MESC we want our teachers to have the additional resources to provide a very high level of education to our children.  Please consider your own children and all of the MESC students when it comes to paying the School Council Requested Fee and the Elective Fees.
