PATRON SAINT OF AUSTRALIA – Correction from last Week
Since 2013 St Mary of the Cross has been Australia’s second Patron Saint. There is always something to learn! Her feast day is 8th August.
Since 1844 the Blessed Virgin Mary under the title of Our Lady Help of Christians, the Holy Mother has been Patron of Australia. Her title as Mary Help of Christians came about in the 16th Century when Pope Pius V included it in the Litany of Loreto. In 1815, Pope Pius VII proclaimed 24th May a Feast Day for Mary Help of Christians when he returned to Rome after years in captivity imposed by Napoleon Bonaparte. Her Feast Day was last week on the 24th May.
THURSDAY SPORT
As part of the PE curriculum we need to teach dance. We do this by incorporating dance into our Thursday sport and the boys love it as they do it in House teams and it is a competition for points. For this to occur we need to make some slight timing changes on several days where the boys leave before recess. On these days the boys need to have their recess and they may need to move music lessons. On Thursday 1st June the boys will leave after Period 1 and on Thursday 15th June the boys will leave at 9.00am. The finale is on 22nd June and parents are most welcome to attend. It is a lot of fun!
ATHLETICS CARNIVAL
On Wednesday 7th June, the boys will come to school in their colour house sports gear and will be bussed to the Athletics warm-up track at Homebush. Parents are most welcome to attend as it is always a fun day. For those parents attending, as you look at the entrance to the main athletics track, the warm up track is a couple of hundred metres to the right.
The boys will be bussed back to school for dismissal which is usually a little bit earlier than 3.00pm. Boys need to have their recess, lunch, drink bottle and cap. A school tracksuit is also advisable if it is a cold day.
RED SHIELD APPEAL
Last Sunday Mr Thomson accompanied a group of St Pius X College boys in the Chatswood/Willoughby area as part of the Salvation Army Red Shield appeal. All these boys interacted with the local community in a courteous and polite manner and were fantastic ambassadors of the school. Given that the level of community generosity overall was quite varied, each of the boys did a great job collecting what they did for an extremely worthy charitable organisation. There were two Junior School students involved, Liam Thomson and Josh Connors. Josh is not in the photo above as he worked with another group on the day.
YEAR 6 EVENTS
COMING EVENTS:
Keep the dates free:
Mr T Long - Head of Junior School
Thursday Sport: A hybrid program runs, including a session of winter sport training and a session of dance. We leave slightly earlier to accommodate this and so boys will need a packed lunch. Students still require AFL, Football (Soccer) and Rugby gear.
Athletics: The Junior School House Carnival takes place on Wednesday 7th June at the Sydney Olympic Park Warm-up venue, Homebush. Parents are of course invited to attend as spectators or in an assisting capacity (ribbons / recording etc.). A detailed letter and program has been emailed to parents and is on the Website/Portal.
Dance: Our Dance program begins this week and is integrated with our Thursday sport program of winter training. Please note the amendments to travel times in the table above. On the early departure days, boys will require a packed lunch. The cost of the 4 week program is $30 and will be charged to Term 3 Fees.
Rugby: The Rugby Club are again running a raffle to raise funds that will be used directly to support your sons (coaching, tours, equipment etc.) All boys have been issued a book of 20 tickets @ $5 each. These need to be returned (sold or unsold) to the Finance Office by Friday 9th June. All boys who sell the entire book of 20 will go in the draw to win a $250 voucher. Thanks in advance for your support of this worthy cause.
Football (Soccer):
Mr G Virgona - Junior School Sportsmaster
AFL:
Many of the team enjoyed the opportunity to go to the Swans v Hawthorn game on Friday night courtesy of the AFL. In addition to having a few unable to play because of illness, there were quite a few tired players for the early morning game against St Aloysius. As a result it took a while for the boys to warm up and get into the game. While we have no trouble getting the ball into the forward line our accuracy in goal kicking still needs some work. Also the backs need to remember to keep their positions and make sure to watch the opposition rather than just the ball. Rory, Aiden and Lachlan were our most enthusiastic players getting into spaces and moving the ball quickly down the field.
Player Points: 3 – Rory Squires; 2- Aiden Saraceno; 1 – Lachlan Connell.

We meet Barker next Saturday so be on time for team warm up at 7:30am.
