Year Six

Science

Pop, fizzle, burn. This term, in Inquiry we learnt about the states of matter. To start the topic off, our teacher told us to classify the objects in the classroom into solid, liquid and gas. The next lesson we learnt about the particle structure in each state of matter. Then we did the water cycle and observed the strength of smell of different perfumes. We also conducted a dissolving experiment and added the words soluble which means can dissolve, insoluble which means can’t dissolve and solvent which means a liquid able to dissolve other substances, to our vocabulary. We performed a gas bag experiment seeing what reacted to bicarbonate and produce carbon dioxide. We also performed a candle experiment and concluded that fire needs oxygen to burn. We learnt about the two major changes, physical and chemical. We learnt that chemical changes cannot be reversed and produce a new substance, like burning wood which emits carbon dioxide while physical changes are reversible and a new substance is not formed for example, butter melting, butter is still the same as a solid or liquid and by it melting a new substance is not formed. This term was incredibly fun and eventful as we did many experiments.

This term we have been learning about solids liquids and gases. It is interesting how water can be a gas just by being in the heat for a long period of time and the water cycle and how water can be a solid or a gas just by being in a different environment. We have also been learning about physical changes and chemical changes. A physical change for example can be if I freeze water I can melt it and it will be in its normal form, an example for a chemical change is if I bake a cake I cannot take the cake apart to all the ingredients.

Hi my name is Rocky. In science this term we learnt a bunch of things like fizzing a tablet until it dissolved using different types of temperatures of water. I had help from my friends like, Lucas, Takura and Ephrame we had fun doing it. We also learned the states of matters which are solids, liquids, and gases. We also did an experiment were we lit a candle with a lighter and then put a beaker over it. I learned that if there is no oxygen in the beaker the light on the candle would burn out. I hope you have a great day as I did.
