Racing for Relay

Race Around the Village

by Amelia Gill

‘Race Around the Village’ was a chance to participate in raising money for cancer, and to help to show our support towards the Cancer Council and the survivors, as well as people that are going through treatment.

‘Race Around the Village’ was simply lots of little activities that you completed in groups - from going to the Mount Eliza dog park and getting a picture with a little dog or buying something from an op shop. Once you started and finished the first challenge, each group was given a clue, to lead them to the next challenge.

It was also a really good chance to discover new personalities of your friends and the people in your group such as leadership and determination.

The goal was to be the first group that finished all of the activities, and to win at the end. If you had completed all of the activities you got those points for the activities but there was also a chance to get more bonus points from extra activities. Some of these activities were counting how many carparks were at the local church, getting a picture on a slide with  3 members of your group, running around the racetrack behind the tennis court and getting the prices of chips at Chicken Now!

All of the groups tried to dress up in a theme which was super heroes and princesses or in purple, to make it that little bit more fun. My group had sparkly hats on, tutus and a purple glove. We just tried to have fun with that just like most other teams.  Certain teams really got into it, while other teams just breezed along, not dressing up too much.

‘Race Around the Village’ was a really fun experience, that I and many other people, are looking forward to doing again next year.

Relay for Life

by Abbey Bradley

This year, we had the opportunity to be involved in Relay for Life at Ballam Park Athletics Track.  It is a chance for us to help raise money for cancer research and also, to celebrate those who have survived cancer, empower those who are currently undergoing treatment and remember those who have passed.  It is also to thank the carers.

The MESC Relay for Life team arrived in their purple and yellow, ready to ‘have a go!’  Our aim was to walk through the night and into the morning achieving as many laps as we could.  In amongst the walking of laps, including a special candlelight ceremony, providing afternoon tea for survivors and carers, and other fundraising efforts, there was a lip-sync battle for those teams who were willing.  Some of the MESC Team (with incredible dance support from Ange – IDEEA Lab teacher) jumped in and belted out, “Allstar”.  Truth be told, we nearly broke the stage!!!

We certainly feel like we made a difference – altogether we raised $4,600.  I encourage everyone to participate in Relay for Life.
