College Sport

Congratulations

Congratulations to everyone that has been participating in school sport in Term 1.  It’s been great to see so many students competing and doing their best while representing Mount Carmel.  We look forward to another huge term of sport in Term 2 and will be in touch with you over the coming weeks as new teams are finalised.

Athletics Carnival

We had a fantastic Years 3-10 Athletics Carnival at the Domain Athletics Centre last Thursday.  The weather was perfect and the students’ efforts were amazing.  The carnival had a fantastic atmosphere, with so much enthusiasm and house spirit from all the students.

It was a close finish, with Carmel announced the overall winner on the day, followed by Loreto and Lourdes.  Lourdes may have finished third in the end, but they were winners of the hotly contested best costume parade with a wonderful display of green.

Congratulations to all the students that participated, and thank you to all the staff and volunteers on the day that helped with a variety of tasks to make the carnival run smoothly.  Individual winners, champions and record breakers will be in the first edition of The View for Term 2.

STCPSSA Swimming Carnival

The Primary Swimming team took to the Hobart Aquatic Centre  pool again last Friday, to compete against students from other Southern Tasmanian Catholic Primary Schools.  Having already swam at the JSSATIS carnival, the swimmers were confident and keen to have another go.  The Mount Carmel College swimmers again did a fantastic job and were extremely supportive and encouraging of each other. Congratulations to all students, involved staff and helpers for a fantastic 2019 swimming season!

State Representatives

Good luck to the 17/Under Tasmanian Netball Team that headed off to Brisbane this week for the National Netball Championships.  Amongst the team are Year 10 students Maddi Hay, Ella Marsh and Grace Pullen and former students Jess Earney and Captain, Charlie Wheller.  A terrific Mount Carmel representation.

The U15 Tasmanian Hockey Team, including Year 9 students Maddison Brooks, Taylor Brooks and Year 8 student Felicity Wilson-Haffenden are also away at the moment, competing in the Australian Championships in Narellan, NSW.  The team has had a great start to the tournament, recording 3 wins and 1 loss so far.   Keep up the great work!

Inter School Horse Trials

Today was a great fun day, it felt different to my other events because I was in my school uniform. I competed at the schools one day event, which is open to Year 5 to 12 students. The Secondary and College students ride in teams but the Primary students ride as individuals.

First I had to ride a set dressage test. For dressage we have to plait our pony’s manes and make them clean and tidy, this is to show respect to your judges and respect and discipline for yourself. When riding dressage, I wear my College winter shirt, tie and jumper with my jodhpurs.

Next I rode cross country, the fun part of the competition. Cross country tests your pony’s stamina and obedience as we go out on a big trail and jump some big solid jumps, all in a set time period. I wear my polo top and rugby jumper for this plus my back protector to protect me in the event of a fall. The third phase of our competition is show jumping where we jump coloured rails in a set order and within a time frame. It’s back to formal uniform for show jumping.

For this competition. I competed on my new pony, Sammy. I have only had him for three months so I didn't have high expectations, but we had an awesome day out and I came second in the Grade 5 section. I was really pleased with Sammy's efforts and look forward to next year.

Primary Soccer

The final games of JSSATIS soccer will be played this afternoon.  Well done to everyone that gave it their all at soccer, and especially to those that were giving it a go for the first time.  We hope the students had lots of fun and families enjoyed watching them.

Thanks to all the secondary students that helped out with coaching and umpiring including Taylah Stewart, Paola Varveris, Polly Tantari, Gemma Esposito, Grace Hegarty, Ella Gowans, Joanne Fitzgerald, Zoe Lauer, Lilly Stewart, Bronte Gadon, Yasmeen Sulieman and Dadiso Makoni.

Thanks also to the parents that gave up their time to Coach, Manage and Umpire including Susan Williams, Gerard McNulty, Nick Fleming, Jess Agius, Rodney Jones, Vanessa Copeland, Paul and Belinda Vernon, and to Mr Damien Lowe who looked after all the students at training on Mondays.
