Movember

The Junior School Council decided to get behind our male staff in supporting Movember this month.  In case you hadn’t noticed, Mr Butler, Mr Able, Mr Cheverton, Mr Tucker, Mr Thomson and Mr Workman have all been sporting some extra facial hair!  Students all wore blue and donated a gold coin on Thursday.  They too added a moustache to their look! All together we raised $400 for the cause; a wonderful effort

History Box

On Wednesday the 26th of November the grade 5s travelled back hundreds of years ago and discovered what happened in Australia. We got to learn about the early Australians and some of us were lucky enough to dress up as our famous ancestors. We were involved in lots of old school activities and games such as, using a pen and nib, and playing the oldest game in the world called, ‘Nacka Nacka’. We learned about our family pasts and we even found some of the staffs families. The Grade 5s had a laugh when we found out Mr Abell’s family name was in the convict’s aisle.

2015 Prep Orientation

Last Friday afternoon, the 2015 Preps excitedly ran out ready to start orientation. The Year 6s participated in this event running 8 activities. These groups consisted of sports like: bowling, bounce the ball into the bucket, sack races, running races and many more. A big thank you to this year’s Preps. As they were a big help throughout the afternoon, not only in helping the new Preps learn new sports but also to welcome them warmly to their new school. The Year 6’s did an excellent job running all events and caring for the younger student. The Year 6’s showed a lot of initiative, responsibility, respect and organisation, and were great role models.

On behalf of all the Year 6’s, we would like to thank Mr Pannam for organising this fantastic afternoon and we thank you for giving us the opportunity to help run this excellent event. We all learnt new things and we are very grateful to lead younger students. At the end of the day everyone had a big smile on their face!!!!!

Lawn Bowls Grand Final

On a beautiful Friday morning the Ormond Rollers set off for the… GRAND FINAL! We rode on our tiny minibus to Bentleigh Bowling Club where we were going to play Tucker Road Primary for the trophy. Mrs Shulman gave us a small pep talk to get our spirits high. We were pumped and ready to go and when Tucker Road FINALLY arrived we started. It began with some intense bowling from both sides and the scores starting level and we thought that nothing could stop us. Three girls from Ormond PS tried to intimidate Tucker Road by wearing glasses to scare them off bowling but it didn’t turn out as planned.

By the end of the 5th end we got a little too cocky and things rapidly went downhill. The scores for the Rollers were dropping fast and our bowling skills weren’t improving as the games moved along. In the end Tucker Road finished out as the champions but we still left the bowling club with our heads held high because… WINNERS ARE GRINNERS!!! GO THE ORMOND ROLLERS!!!!!!!!!!

Year 4 Camp

Last week, on a rainy Monday morning, 73 excited Year 4 students set off from Ormond Primary School to the Lady Northcote Recreation Camp, set in the picturesque hills not far from Bacchus Marsh.

No spirits could be dampened by a bit of rain, and the students were quickly into their first activity of the camp. Over the three days, the students rotated through different activities designed to promote social development, team building, increase confidence and self-esteem, build resilience and encourage a bit of safe risk taking. The activities were, archery, canoeing, yabbying, giant swing, orienteering and more.

The students have written of some of their camp experiences below.

"Last week, on Wednesday the 25th of November, my activity group, The Fantastic Fires, walked to the giant swing. It made me dizzy just to look at it!

First, Andrea, the YMCA leader explained all the safety rules, and then we got into action! Philbert was the first one to go on. We hauled the rope along and by the end, my hands were numb! Philbert went all the way to the top. It looked very frightening!

When my turn came, I was excited, nervous, apprehensive and scared all rolled up into one huge mixed ball of emotions. I went to the top (21 metres)! I was absolutely terrified when I had to tug on the cord though! When I did pull it, the ground came rushing up to meet me and I felt like I was about to fall, but at the last moment I swung back and I felt nausea rise up inside me. Back and forth, back and forth until I slowed down and stopped.

I will never forget what that amazing moment felt like. I would definitely do it again!

What an experience!"  -   Laura G

"Last week, at the Lady Northcote camp, the awesome Crazy Campers walked slowly down to the left side of the wet, clear dam. We all listened carefully to James our funny YMCA instructor. James told us what to do if we got stranded in our canoes, or when our boat tipped over sideways. Luckily ours didn’t.

The second instruction was to get into our PFD (Personal Floating Device) and to slip on our hard, yellow and big helmets, before we chose our canoes. I was in a group called Jaws and in my group were Ms G and James. Jaws always won because James liked canoeing, and I had paddled before on my recent holiday in Greece.

In the final game we did Canoe Tiggy with a pyramid ball. I had a great time canoeing at Lady Northcote camp."   -  Kosta K

"Last Tuesday, at Lady Northcote Camp, my group, The Super Swingers, walked excitedly down to the dam to try our luck at catching big, black yabbies.

As soon as we got on the jetty, Mrs.Bell showed us how to put the slimy, meat bait onto the line. Luckily for me I got the line Mrs.Bell did, so I didn’t have to touch the slimy bait. I couldn’t wait to get started.

“Ahhh!” Miss Valance screamed because she felt a big tug on her line.

“I got one! I got one!”  -  Jonah yelled.

"Jonah caught the biggest yabby I’d ever seen, but to be honest, it was also the first yabby I’d ever seen. It was still really big.

Soon, after lots of waiting and waiting and waiting and waiting, I finally felt a tug.

“Net! Net! Wait, it doesn’t matter, he’s gone now,” I yelled. I did lots more waiting till finally I felt another small tug. I pulled it up slowly and yelled again, “Net! I caught one! Yes! I will call him Frank.”

In the end, all together we caught 4 yabbies; Joe, Frank, Pete and Bob. When we did the race back to the water, Pete came first then Joe, not far behind. Next was Bob, and then my Frank."  -  Sabrina P

"On a sunny Tuesday afternoon, at the amazing Lady Northcote camp, my group the Super Swingers walked down the rocky road to the dam to try to catch some big, fat, black, hard shelled yabbies.

“Oh no, DUCKS; they’re going to be a nuisance!” I exclaimed. And, so they were, as they kept nibbling at our bait. Some of us held out our bait and the ducks went crazy ripping the bait to pieces. I called them the “Killer Ducks!”

“Pass me a net!” I shouted. I put the net under the yabby, I lifted it out, but it fell back in.

At the end of the activity we ended up only catching 4 yabbies but I think the weather kept them in their homes.

Jonah caught 1, Miss Valance caught the second one called Pete, Sabrina caught Frank and Miss Valance caught Bob.

At the end, the yabbies had a race to the water. Two yabbies got stuck so I helped them out of the crack in the Jetty.

I felt frustrated when I didn’t catch the yabby but I would do it again.

Next we went canoeing" - Jett R

Twilight Market

Friday the 21st was a fantastic evening for our Twilight Market and the people came in droves!

Thank you to everyone who volunteered your time to make this event a success. It would not have been possible without the contributions of everyone who helped in some way.

Plus we are grateful to everyone who came along, added to the great vibe and spent money on our stalls and competitions.
