Year 11 Chemistry

Year 11 Excursion to Curtin University

The Year 11 ATAR Chemistry students visited Curtin University this week for a day of practical, fun and challenging STEM activities. The day began with a presentation on the Chemistry involved in obtaining fingerprint evidence and an opportunity for the boys to examine their own fingerprints left on a piece of ‘evidence’.

The amazing facilities of the Curtin Chemistry laboratories were then made available for the students to perform titration experiments, analysing a sample of vinegar to determine its acetic acid concentration.  The students put their laboratory skills to good use and challenged each other to achieve the most accurate titre volume.  A very impressive standard of teamwork and analytical technique was displayed by all as well as a healthy degree of competitiveness!

After an enjoyable lunch break it was time for the students to work in teams in a  Mathematics Break-In Challenge. This involved solving a series of puzzles to obtain codes that opened various sets of locks, allowing access to the next ‘box’.  Throughout the day, the Year 11 boys were also presented with possible tertiary pathways in the science field by postgraduate and research students from Curtin.

I would like to congratulate all the boys on their outstanding behaviour and participation throughout the day, they are fine young ambassadors for the College.
