Another busy fortnight for the Secondary Sub School. It has been great checking in with each room and seeing some of the programs being run.

SBAT - School Based Apprenticeship or traineeship

Last Thursday I headed down to Northpoint in Tullamarine. Several of our VPC students attend here each Tuesday and Thursday each week. On this day they complete tasks such as assembly line packing, completing orders, storing of food items safely, adhere to workplace Health and Safety guidelines, delivery of orders and many more tasks.  On Tuesdays they are taught warehousing skills while they work at Northpoint.  On Thursday the students engage in work book based tasks where they complete requirements to attain their certificate II in Warehousing.

Northpoint provides people who have Health Care Cards with the opportunity to access groceries, including pantry items, fresh fruit and vegetables, fridge and freezer items and even pet food, at a very low cost to the family. I would encourage families to look into this as it’s a great support especially giving the cost of living nowadays. You can find more information about this on the Student and Staff  Wellbeing Page of this week’s newsletter.

Advance has been attending the Brotherhood of St Lawrence this term as part of the careers program. This is a volunteering program where students attend a work place to learn work place skills. At Brotherhood of St Lawrence they learn about customer service, sorting stock, stacking shelves, presentation of stock and many more skills. Our students have shown a very good work ethic and are finding this program to be very beneficial.

Some of our students have been attending Brite Industries this term to undertake volunteering opportunities. Brite industries provides students with disabilities the chance to learn workplace skills in a supported industry experience. Students take part in tasks such as sorting, packing, completing orders and moving items. A highlight of this program is the chance to see some of our past students there working as well.

HOL Café and Build have swapped classes this semester. The Canteen program has been extended to middle years this semester. It is great to see some of the amazing food options each week that staff and students can buy. Students in this program are learning food industry work skills which will support them in finding jobs outside of school in the food industry.

It really is great to see the many opportunities that our students have to learn skills which will help them out of school. It was fantastic to talk to a student in secondary who recently got a job in a busy fast food restaurant and is doing incredibly well with their training. He was able to independently apply for a job and to thrive within the industry. Well done to this student and I look forward to hearing other stories of success as our students find their place outside of school.

Room 19

Room 19 has effortlessly returned to the school routine. The students are enjoying engaging in various learning activities, both hands on and theory based. This term we will be focusing on going to the cinema for our living skills program and will work towards an excursion to the movies.

The students in Room 19 really love using the bikes and having lots of varying movement breaks, such as dancing and using the trampoline. This term we are missing both our amazing Education Support Staff, Tina and Elizabeth (at different times), as they are lucky enough to be holidaying in Europe.
