Last week, our Primary students had a very special visitor! A beautiful dog called George, along with his handler Judy, came to visit the Primary classrooms. Every classroom had time to meet George and Judy. The students were very excited to say hello, look at George and some students gave George a pat. Judy talked about what George likes and needs to be happy. This week, the students are learning how to touch George appropriately. Last week, our students received a social story to take home about meeting George. This week, another social story has focussed on how to pet George. This is a fantastic learning opportunity for our students to learn how to interact with a dog. George is so friendly, and he is loving all the attention! Judy and George will continue their visits to our Primary classrooms every Thursday afternoon. You can read all about George and Judy by clicking here.
Kinder Gym has been a very successful program for our students in their first and second years of school at JSA. Our students are learning how to explore equipment appropriately while building strength, balance, and coordination. Rooms 3 and 6 have recently completed the program. Next week, Room 1 will begin their sessions at Essendon Keilor Gymnastic Academy each Monday afternoon, and Room 2 will begin the following week. If you have a current Working with Children’s Check and are interested in supporting these classrooms on Monday afternoons during the excursions, please let myself or your child’s teacher know.
We are having some very cold weather at the moment. Despite this, our students still enjoy their time outside to play and explore. Please ensure that your child brings a labelled beanie and coat to wear to keep them warm. We will remain indoors when it is raining, however students will play outside if there is no rain.
Preps have settled in well after the school break and had a wonderful start to Term 3! They have been busy working on their learning tubs for Literacy and Numeracy. In Literacy, the Preps have been learning the sounds and formation of letters using the Jolly Phonics program. They have been enjoying read aloud books such as ‘The Very Hungry Caterpillar’. In Numeracy, Preps are continuing to explore numbers with simple adding and taking away activities. They enjoyed singing and role-playing counting songs such as ‘Five Little Speckled Frogs’ and ‘Five Little Ducks’. During Naidoc week, the Preps learned about what the colours of the Aboriginal flag mean, and they made fantastic Artwork!
The best part so far this term was meeting George and Judy for the school’s Canine Comprehension program. The Preps have enjoyed patting George gently and are looking forward to learning about him for the rest of the term.
The Preps are also going to Kinder Gym this term at Keilor Gymnastics for fun activities to help with their motor skills! Lots of fun and enjoyable learning activities ahead for the Preps in Term 3 to look forward to!
