From the Acting Principal,

Elissa Campbell

What a cold and wintery few weeks it has been since students returned to school for Term 3. We have seen several icy mornings and I would like to take this opportunity to remind everyone in our community to take care both in and outside our school grounds on days like these. While we take precautions where possible, it is still a challenge to manage the icy conditions around our school. We have been lucky that the sun does eventually peek through on these days, which means students have still been able to get out in the yard for most recesses and lunches.

Details of our Lapathon were sent out to families yesterday, it is being held on Wednesday 9th August. Students are encouraged to collect sponsorship and to walk as many laps of our circuit as possible, there are some great prizes on offer and of course a delicious BBQ lunch at the end (orders via QKR). Families are welcome to attend to walk with their child or just to cheer them on from the sidelines. Students look forward to this event each year and we are hoping the weather holds out for the day, we usually hold a whole school tug of war however the conditions on the oval are too wet at the moment, so we will reschedule this for finer weather.

Our Literacy Professional Learning team are working hard to plan our Book Week Open Morning for Wednesday 23rd August. Students are invited to dress up as their favourite book character and learning for the day will focus on the short listed books for this year. We will hold our parade in the morning and will open classrooms so families can participate in classroom literacy sessions. More information will be sent out to families soon, but please save the date and start talking to your child about possible costume ideas.

Many of you may have noticed the orange ‘Smile Squad’ van parked outside the school office, this is a Victorian government free dental program for school students. Sometimes visiting the dentist can be scary for some children (and adults too!), the great thing about the Smile Squad staff is they are used to working with kids and helping to ease their worries. Some of our students have even taken a friend or a teacher to their appointment. Approximately 200 of our students have registered for their dental checkup which is fantastic and the van will be around for a few more weeks as they work through the list. Please see Sue’s update in this newsletter for further information.

In March, many of our Year 3 and 5 students participated in NAPLAN online testing and last Friday NAPLAN reports were sent home to parents of students in Year 3 and Year 5. If you have not received yours or your child was absent, please contact the office.

Tomorrow our Foundation students will be celebrating their first 100 days of school and we are looking forward to seeing them arrive as their 100-year-old selves and enjoy a day of learning that revolves around their theme of 100.

We are looking forward to the many exciting learning opportunities that we have planned for this term and appreciate your support in your child’s learning journey. Stay warm.
