Building Respectful Relationships

Stepping out against gender violence

RESPECTFUL RELATIONSHIPS COMMITTEE SEEKS PARENT MEMBERS

Respectful Relationships education is a core component of the Victorian Curriculum from Foundation to Year 12. The Respectful Relationships program supports schools to promote and model respect, positive attitudes and behaviours. It teaches our children how to build healthy relationships, resilience and confidence.

The Respectful Relationships Committee at RPS comprises a small number of staff who assist teachers to implement this curriculum. We are currently seeking two parents or carers to join our committee to offer their own insights and help communicate to our community some of the program’s important messages. Parent members are welcome to join our fortnightly meetings, held every second Tuesday at 9.00-9.50am.

If you are interested in becoming a member or would like further information, please contact Emma Fay via email at emma.fay@education.vic.gov.au.

Next term we will share more information about some of the topics our students are learning including Gender and Identity and Positive Gender Relationships. Over the holidays you may wish to revisit The Conservation Guide which was featured in the newsletter late last year–this Australian Government resource provides a practical guide to having conversations with young people about respect.

Resilience, Rights and Respectful Relationships

The Resilience, Rights and Respectful Relationships learning materials have been designed for teachers in primary and secondary schools to develop students’ social, emotional and positive relationship skills. Efforts to promote social and emotional skills and positive gender norms in children and young people has been shown to improve health-related outcomes and wellbeing. It also reduces antisocial behaviours including engagement in gender-related violence.

The Resilience, Rights and Respectful Relationships (RRRR) learning materials cover eight topics of Social and Emotional Learning across all levels of primary and secondary education:

Emotional Literacy; Personal Strengths; Positive Coping; Problem-Solving; Stress Management; Help Seeking; Gender and Identity; and Positive Gender Relationships.

Here at Ripponlea, the 4Rs are a core component of our curriculum. Over the next term, we will spotlight one of the eight topics and provide some details about what we cover. We hope this will support you with initiating and facilitating conversations at home with your child.
