Boys to Men

We are excited to be announcing a Koorie boys program in partnership with Mullum Mullum Indigenous Gathering Place (MMIGP) and Dardi Munwurro to offer support for boys social, emotional wellbeing and strengthening their cultural identity. The program will likely involve a two hour session, once per week throughout Term 3 and 4 and will conclude with a camp on Country.

On Wednesday 27th July, the broader Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community was invited to meet members from MMIGP and Dardi Munwurro at Heathmont College. This was an opportunity for families from Heathmont and local schools and to be consulted on what they would like to see as part of the program.

Cultural & Diversity Inclusion

During the Curriculum Day on Thursday 5th August, staff were professionally developed in the area of Cultural and diversity inclusion. More specifically, staff were educated on the Reconciliation Action Plan, Cultural Safety and Respect in the Classroom as well as spending time planning curriculum to include more Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander histories and culture in their respective curriculum areas. For example, the PE staff have since taught traditional Indigenous Games, the English faculty have reviewed their texts, Science are looking at traditional methods used by Aboriginals and Torres Strait Islanders  and languages are looking at ways to teach about First Nations Culture in German. The session was a great success with many staff now looking forward to implementing their new lessons! Feel free to have a look at some of the resources used on the day:

Koorie Big Day Out

The Koorie Big Day out is an opportunity for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students to learn about life after high school. On the day, expect to hear from each university about courses, access pathways, scholarships, accommodation, what’s university like?

  • Parents can speak to educators about course selection, exams, study help, VCE and school to university transition.
  • Hear from university alumni about their career journeys.
  • Fun, prizes and giveaways, oh and there will be a short intermission to break up the morning.
  • The event is open for any Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander person thinking about university study. (not just school secondary school students)

Below is the Koorie Big Day flyer with details on how to register.
