Northcote Teams at the Vic Schools Volleyball

Senior Girls Regional Netball

On Friday of week 2, the senior Girls Netball Team headed off to Macleod Nets Stadium for the Northern Metropolitan Secondary Netball Senior Girls Region Finals. The girls were up against some tough competition on the day including schools such as Whittlesea and St Helena’s. They fought hard in each of the games during the day to make it through to the final against SEDA Inner North. The team knew it was going to be a hard match and were determined to give it their all and leave everything on the court.

It was a good match up of teams, but SEDA were able to take the lead by a few goals early in the first quarter. SEDA held the lead until the last 5 minutes of the game where it turned into an arm wrestle of goals and turnovers with the lead changing several times in the dying minutes.

With about 30 seconds to go the scores were tied and Northcote got an intercept before taking the ball down the court and score a goal to win by a single goal.

The team had been training before school and at lunchtimes over the past term for these events. The excitement and joy of such hard work and perseverance was amazing to see. It was quite an emotional rollercoaster cheering from the sidelines, but we couldn't be prouder of how the girls represented the school on the day and can't wait for the next challenge of State Finals this month!

Victorian Schools Volleyball Cup

NHS had an amazing 4 days at the Vic Schools Volleyball tournament. 70 students gathered at school bright and early to board the bus to Dandenong State Volleyball Centre and Springers Leisure Centre in Keysborough.

We entered eight teams throughout the tournament including four Year 7 teams, one Year 8 team, one Year 9 team and two Year 10 teams. Each team played games over Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Each team play very well and improved significantly throughout the weekend. It was fantastic seeing a sea of purple NHS supporters throughout the finals on Monday.

The Year 10 girls lost the bronze medal, in a three-set, nail biting match. The suspense of this game resulted in the NHS supporters jumping out of their seats with each point that was won. The Year 7 Division 2 boys made their opponent fight for every point in their three-set bronze medal match, which resulted in encouraging chants from the NHS cheer squad. Unfortunately, they Year 7 boys lost their final, but they demonstrated so much potential for a team who has only just started playing together. Congratulations to the Year 10 boys who won the gold medal in Division 1 for the tournament. What an incredible achievement!

Thank you to all the staff who assisted and supported the NHS Development Program throughout the tournament, as well as those who have helped supervise morning and afterschool trainings over the last six months. A BIG thank you to our fantastic student coaches; Alicia Chant, Amelia Mensingh, Jacquie Barlow, Chiara Vagnarelli, Julia Rossi-Hunt, Fred Culham, Connor Murray, Jack Donegan and Aaron Faux.

Senior Boys Regional Hockey

The senior boys hockey team competed strongly in the regional finals but lacked the polish around goal to make it through to state. The boys finished the day with two 0-0 draws and a 1-0 loss. Defensively, the team stood tall against some strong opposition but we were unable to take advantage of our penalty corners and chances in front of goal. Considering most of the players had backgrounds from other sports the side performed really well. Best players included Angus Middleton, Matt Bromley and Nathan McIntosh

Yr 7 Boys Regional Football

The year 7 boys AFL team went out on Thursday 28th July to the regional competition. The first game was successful against Mernda Central, winning 7.6.48 to 1.0.6. Some unselfish passes in the forward 50 shared the goals around.

Mirroring some of the older AFL teams in the regional comp, the final game needed to be won against Viewbank to advance to the Region Final. It was a tough contest from the start with Viewbank kicking the first 2 goals. With just 2 minutes to go in the match Northcote scored to get within 3 points, before ultimately going down by 9 points. Northcote 2.0.12 to Viewbank 3.3.21

Fred B did fantastic in the ruck all day, especially against a 6ft ruck from Viewbank, Sonny L covered the ground well contributing in the midfield, Ellery was a rock in defence and transitioning off half back and Paul was too strong up forward with some huge contested marks.

A big thank you to our wonderful year 9 coaches Eliza and Samuel, and to Phoebe H for goal umpiring.
