Koori Health and Medical Careers Day

Emma, Finn, Soul and Rose with Uncle Jim Berg

Exploring career pathways in Health professions

Last week, me and 3 other First Nations students went to Reservoir High School for a Koori Health and Medical Careers Taster Day. Indigenous health bodies such as VACCHO, VAHS and AIDA as well as the Royal Melbourne's and Royal Women's Hospital's Aboriginal health programs came to speak to Koori students from all around Naarm (Melbourne).

We listened to the experiences of Dr. Glenn Harrison, the first Aboriginal emergency doctor and Uncle Jim Berg who presented some beautiful poetry. We also met a baby wombat and Star the Labrador from the Guide Dogs!

Though we weren't all necessarily planning to go into a health career, we got a lot out of this day - Universities Monash, Deakin and La Trobe came and gave lots of information about pathways for us into a variety of courses.

The health bodies were really informative on how First Nations people can get healthcare and medical treatment and encouraging us to pursue what we want to do with pride.  It was a great day spent with mob out on Wurundjeri country!
