Inspiring Careers in Health Camp

Recently Alexandra Van de Veer, Ashwyn Singh, Alyssa Weir, Anna Tsuchida, Katie Reeves, Mr Brad Cavalot and Mrs Elly Martin participated in a 3 day Careers in Health Camp which was organised by our local BBLLLEN. The days involved:

  • A day at Fed Uni with interactive rotations looking at the different health course areas.
  • Followed by an Inspiring Health Dinner which involved dinner with local health care professionals, where we had the opportunity to talk about their journey, current role, advice, etc.
  • The second day involved a full day at TAFE Gippsland undertaking very practical health course related practical rotations including safely moving patients, taking general observations, experience with physical aides, prescribing exercises and VR experiences.
  • We had an evening of trivia, games and pizza.
  • Our third day involved an informative visit and tour of WGHG Allied Health Unit, presentations from Health staff and a tour of the Warragul Linen Service.
  • On both mornings we were provided a hearty breakfast accompanied by some local organisations who provided information on Community Support and Job and Skills Support.

Feedback from the students about the best part was as follows:

  • The inspiring health dinner, for the opportunity to chat with a large variety of local people in career roles of interest about their career journey and key points of advice (Ashwyn and Alyssa)
  • Really enjoyed the Warragul Linen Service tour, as I had never been in a factory before and it was really cool. My favourite part was the really hands-on practical activities during Day 2 at TAFE Gippsland (Katie)
  • The general opportunity to chat to local people, in their roles about their day-to-day activities and pathways (Anna)
  • It was really good to get an idea of the different opportunities and pathways including university and TAFE, and speaking to a variety of individuals of various health roles at the inspiring health dinner provided inspiration of these various ways to get where they are now – not necessarily straight from high school either. (Alex)
  • Thoroughly enjoyed the activities, even including the breakfast and evening sessions.
