Leadership

In motivating people, you've got to engage their minds and their hearts. I motivate

people…by example - and perhaps by excitement, by having productive ideas to make others feel involved.

This week, all Year 11 students have been encouraged to apply for a School Prefect, Boarding and Co-Curricular Captaincy. Students are required to submit a letter of application and a resume.

The entire process for selecting each of our school leaders (prefects) is, in my opinion, exhaustive and transparent, and one which is confined to schools of our relatively small size. We conduct a seven-stage process, as follows:

  1. Every Year 11 student is encouraged to submit a formal application, together with a resume to their Head of House.
  2. Every Year 11 student is formally interviewed by the Head of House.
  3. Students short listed by the Head of House to be School Captain or SRC President (Vice Captains) are formally interviewed by the Principal and Deputy Principals.
  4. Each student from Years 7 to 12 is invited to vote for House and School Captains.
  5. Staff are invited to cast votes for School Captains.
  6. The Pastoral Care Committee, consisting of the Principal, Deputy Principal Wellbeing, Head of Middle Years, Head of Senior Years, Director of Boarding, together with Heads of House meet to make recommendations for successful candidates.
  7. The Principal appoints the successful candidates on the recommendation of the committee.

Unsuccessful candidates are invited to speak to the Head of House to discuss their application and to receive guidance.

Where possible, we endeavour to share leadership roles and responsibilities amongst the entire Year 11 group. Captaincies of sport, music and drama to name a few provide other leadership opportunities for students, who may not have been successful with the selection of Prefect positions.

Wellness Week

Monday 22 to Friday 26 August

Wellness week is always one of my favourite weeks of the school year. During the week, beginning Monday 22 August, the SRC has organised several fun activities. Each lunchtime, activities will run to encourage students to think about their mental health and to encourage positive engagement between students of all year levels. Students can look forward to House Dodgeball, Discos, Live Music, Yoga and Just Dance and a whole school BBQ with the Junior School.

Sadly, we have not had enough entries for College Has Got Talent to take place on Friday, 26 August. We will postpone and see if we can find another time in Term 4.

Helping your community - it's time to step up

💡Do you want work experience on a large scale event? Why not volunteer at the WDHS (Hamilton Base Hospital) 'Medicine Ball', add the experience to your resume, clock up your community service hours and give back to your community. All funds raised go to your local health service in providing an MRI for your community.
