Year 1/2–Celebrating Learning

1/2 Mainstream

This term we have been learning about past and present. All students were given the task of interviewing an elder in our community to find out about the way play and toys have changed over time. These stories were presented back in the classroom when the students gave an oral presentation. Students have learnt and practised vocabulary including the words “modern”, “ancient”, “artefacts” and “era”.

“My nan used to played with elastics” (Arlo, 1/2C)
“My Grandad used to kick a tin can down the road” (Alex, 1/2C)
“Look at my Dad’s mobile phone, it’s a flip phone and it has buttons!” (Pepi, 1/2D)

In maths, students have been learning about multiplication. Our 1/2 teachers are really proud of how well we can draw and make arrays.

Class One finished the Ancient Tales from Around the World Main Lesson, with the Scottish tale ‘Kate Crackernuts’. Students used the imagery of the door on the side of the hill to explore prediction. Connections made throughout this Main Lesson have lead beautifully into narrative writing.

Last week 1S began the Numberland and the Process Predicament Main Lesson where students have been learning strategies, and making connections between addition and subtraction, division and multiplication through story and manipulation of concrete materials.

Class 2 have been exploring our Magic Numbers Main Lesson. We have followed the story of a kingdom where numbers have the power to enchant, including by turning villagers into cats! During this main lesson, we have explored sums formed from magic squares, finding missing numbers through utilisation of subtraction from the sum total (a magic square has all rows in every direction adding up to the same sum). We have been making connections between addition and subtraction, including through the use of concrete materials, number lines, and vertical sums to solve problems.

We are now moving into building connections between sharing and multiplication as part of this main lesson. We have also been enjoying independent narrative writing using one of two images of cats as our “seed”. As per our usual rhythm, we have been enjoying a multitude of holistic learning in morning circle, as well as artistic work in our classroom (including clay modelling, watercolour painting, beeswax modelling, form drawing and craft).
