Kindergarten News

Budja:
Last week in the Budja group the children planted grass seeds in a stocking, which was then placed in a cup with water. The children learnt about the concept of making a prediction and were then each supported to predict how long it would take for their seeds to start sprouting. Some children predicted the next day, or in two days, or the following week. This week when we arrived at kinder we were delighted to see that our stocking 'aliens' had started to sprout hair! We checked our prediction board to see which children had made the closest guesses. We are looking forward to checking our aliens next week to see how much more the grass has grown!

Playing group games at kindergarten is a fabulous way for children to practice valuable skills in an environment that is safe, fun, and familiar. They can then use these skills to deepen their play. Eye contact, turn-taking, understanding emotions, and listening are all key skills in life. This week we played ‘Don’t Wake The Monkey’ where children practiced self-regulation skills, and worked collaboratively. We also played a game where children were given pairs of matching pictures. Children needed to find their ‘partner’ (the child that had the same picture as them) and stand next to them. They practiced lots of skills in this exercise. They needed to show each other their picture; they had to look at other people; they had to talk to other people; and they had to stand next to someone that was not their best friend. Outside, we have observed the children’s gross motor skills developing further each time they engage with the gym mats. Children are practicing cartwheels, handstands, somersaults and more. They are showing persistence in practicing some moves over and over.

Eating is an essential part of life. Developing good food habits during early childhood encourages a positive attitude towards enjoying a healthy diet and lifestyle later in life. We have been developing the children's awareness of healthy eating and good nutrition by engaging them in many conversations about healthy eating during meal time. This week the children were offered to read a book called "I can eat a rainbow" and offered an activity to sort out between the healthy foods and 'sometimes' foods on the mat. We also explored the digestive system by watching a video and drawing a body figure to understand how food is digested in our bodies. In physical well-being, we offered the children many activities, including an apple tree circle game, obstacle course and tail catching game.

This week the children have been invited to do an emotion check-in and share their feelings and thoughts during group time. We read a book called "Brown bear brown bear what can you see" to continue supporting the children's learning in numeracy and literacy. Also, the children were experiencing for the very first time playing Bingo in a large group. Everyone showed great enthusiasm and concentration throughout the game. Of course, we also explored the outdoors.
