Term 3 Week 6

Specialist Feature News: Visual Arts

Selamat Siang Semuanya,

Across the Specialist Team we have a shared focus on incorporating all of the Specialist subjects, such as Indonesian culture and language to promote cross curricular links and learning. In this week's newsletter, we are sharing some of the Indonesian based work we have been focusing on in Visual Arts over the past few weeks! In the lead up to Indonesian day this Wednesday 17th, we have been creating Indonesian inspired art in our Visual Arts sessions.

The Senior students have been focusing on the questions: Mau minum apa? and Mau makan apa? (What do you want to drink/eat) To support this vocabulary and cultural learning, the 5/6 students researched, draft and sketched their own Indonesian food, drink or snack. They used pencil and chalk-pastel to create their work and were challenged to include highlights and shadowing techniques. Students have also started to design their own Batik drawing in preparation for their Batik-making incursion this week!

The 3/4 students focused on 'makanan' (food) also and created their own paper mache donuts using cardboard, newspaper, tissue paper and paper mache mixture. Students were inspired by the kerupuk-eating contest that is usually played in Indonesia on August 17th. In this contest, students usually eat a kerupuk cracker on a string, without using their hands. Instead of kerupuk, students have created their own donut on a string and will be decorating these in coming weeks for display!

The 1/2 students have begun creating their paper mache 'topeng' masks, inspired from Balinese and Javanese classical Topeng Dancing. Students have been collaborating with peers to create their masks and spent time exploring different emotions and colours associated with each mask. What do you think red represents in Indonesian masks?

In Foundation, students learnt about 'Kuda Lumping' horses used in Indonesian Dancing. They watched videos of the dance and worked collaboratively to create their own Kuda Lumping using recycled materials such as cardboard and paper. Foundation students have also showcased their fine-motor skills when creating Red and White Indonesian Day hearts to display this week! We are so impressed at their perseverance, creativity and teamwork!

We are so excited for Indonesian Day and look forward to presenting our art displays around the school!

Terima Kasih,
