Curriculum
We have officially made it halfway through Term Three! We are incredibly proud of the way students have been demonstrating their ‘love of learning’ by trying their best in all activities and consistently challenging themselves. We will continue to unpack and refer back to our school value of responsibility throughout the term.
Foundation are looking forward to our Indonesian Day celebrations this Wednesday the 17th of August. Students can come to school in putih (white) and merah (red) matching the Indonesian flag. Alternatively, students may wear traditional Indonesian clothing if they have any at home. On Friday the 19th of August, we will be joined by the amazing Sanggar Lestari for a traditional Indonesian dance workshop! To accommodate the hall space and time for this wonderful incursion, we will not be running PMP on Friday 19th August.
In Literacy, we continued to explore problems and solutions in a range of texts that we read, listened to and viewed digitally. After demonstrating confidence identifying problems and solutions from texts, students came up with their own! Students were given a prompt - Mrs Streitberger was having a bad day - and asked to develop a more detailed problem by writing a sentence and drawing a matching picture. Ollie Opener introduced us to words that we may use to start our sentences in an entertaining way. Our problems began with ‘Suddenly’ and solutions began with ‘Luckily’. At home you might identify different openers in books you read, or use creativity to come up with your own!
In Maths, we entered into the world of addition and subtraction! In Foundation, we focus on building the foundation skills and number knowledge. We begin our learning by using hands on manipulatives such as counters and unifix blocks to represent two numbers and can count all to find ‘how much all together’ or the total. Students are introduced to a range of problem solving and addition strategies based on their needs. Some of the strategies explored in Week 5 were, ‘Count on’, ‘Use my fingers’, ‘Make a model’ (using materials), ‘Draw a diagram’ and ‘Number lines’. We are learning to ‘Think Big’ and ‘Count Small’ when finding the total of two numbers. This week, we will use our knowledge and problem solving skills when approaching subtraction problems.
In the coming weeks throughout Term Three, we will be unpacking and challenging gender stereotypes as a part of the Respectful Relationships Wellbeing Program. Students will discuss their interests, likes and dislikes, and make connections between themselves and their peers. We already know that all the colours of the rainbow are for everyone, not boys or girls only!
