Curriculum
Salamat Siang,
This week's edition of the Leadership Centre news is brought to you by students of 5/6W!
Maths: Measurement and Geometry
This week we have been learning about how to plot coordinates on a Cartesian plane. We have continued to develop our understanding of shape, location and transformation using a Cartesian plane. After speaking with other students in the Leadership Centre, it is clear that it has been an enjoyable unit so far with everyone displaying a lot of positivity. We love getting the opportunity to problem solve and learn new concepts.

Writing: Debating
‘Can we please welcome the first speaker of the affirmative team!’ The adjudicator declared! The first speaker presented their speech that they had been preparing over the past week with their team. Each speaker then walked on stage one after the other, and they were all amazing! The teams anticipated argument from their opposition and planned their rebuttals based on that. Although we may have been nervous, we all enjoyed our debating unit and really encouraged each other to do our very best! What interesting topics do you think we should debate about next?

Reading
This term we have been working on building websites for a book of our own choice. This is how we showcase our understanding of what we have been learning in Reading including what we would need to add (e.g author and character analysis, the purpose of the book and explore themes in the text) as well as completing Thinking Routines to better show our understanding. Every week we are given the opportunity to choose a task and once completed we add it to our website.
We have also been looking at articles and books on First Nations peoples around the world and are learning about their rich histories. We read ‘I am Sacagawea’ by Brad Meltzer and Christopher Eliopoulos. With this we have been writing down our thoughts, opinions and inferences on these texts by using different templates and proformas such as the Connect, Extend, Challenge visual thinking template.

Guided Inquiry: 'Journey to Discovery'
5…4…3…2…1 BLAST OFF! Welcome to the Leadership Centre Universe where we have been discovering how new civilisations can be created. In Guided Inquiry the 5/6s have been making their own creative planets that can sustain life. We have been engaged in research that allows us to better understand what makes a planet habitable. Through our research we have discovered what is essential for organisms like humans to survive and thrive! Some examples of important resources include: agriculture, water, shelter and natural material and we had to think critically and justify how these resources can be obtained and managed in our new civilization. Some students created new temperatures of uniquely created seasons on their planet and even created their own time system. We also named our planets, moons, months and countries by exploring how Latin words influence the English language. See you out there - somewhere in the universe!

Wellbeing: Attitudes to School Survey
Attitudes to Schools Surve (AtoSS) is a Department or Education survey that helps schools to gauge student’s feelings and opinions about their school. Students from Year 4 - 6 completed the survey in Term 2. The data from the survey are carefully analysed by staff and students to help improve outcomes for students and to help our school become better. In our Wellbeing session, the Year 5/6 students analyse the data and made predictions as to why the data is the way it is. Students also brainstormed strategies and actions that allow for us to help improve the data. We will work closely with the teachers to make an impact. We look forward to seeing positive changes.
