Welcome to Performing Arts with Mrs Searles

Welcome to the Performing Arts Room

As of Semester Two we have changed from Visual to Performing Arts. So far this term we have explored singing, dance, drama, musical beats, rhythm and tempo, singing and learning how to play tuned instruments. Students are exposed to a wide range of music and drama components each session, which could involve learning a group or individual dance, singing along to new songs, playing tuned and untuned instruments or acting out a scene.

Our 3-6 students have been learning how to play songs on our keyboards, tongue drums and glockenspiels. They are taught how to read basic notations and then have a choice of songs to try and learn how to play on their instrument. Percussion instruments are used every session and form the basis of our program, which helps students grasp the concepts of rhythm, beat, tempo, pitch and harmony.

In our drama units, students are encouraged to use their ‘whole body’ to create a mood, scene or freeze. Our faces are not the only ways to represent emotion and feelings and the students are exploring the different ways in which these can be represented.

So far the Prep-Grade 2 students have performed Mr Clicketty Cane before a school audience, teaching our more senior students this fun and quirky tune. It is great to see everyone involved and so enthusiastic when it comes to performing.

Our senior school students have been looking at dance styles through the ages and will soon be creating their own TV commercials. This will involve acting out scenes, creating a brand theme and musical composition and filming and editing their final results.

It has been a great transition to the new program and I look forward to exploring more musical, theatrical and dance components with your students later this term.

Regards
