Science

In the past few Science lessons, students have been engaged in exploring animals and insects and the various adaptations that they have to survive in the environment around them.

The Foundation/Grade One class explored the outside environment with magnifying glasses using the theme of "We're Going on a Playground Safari''. Many bugs and insects were found as well as a Tawny Frogmouth in the tree next door! This then instigated some class research on owls to which we found out that the Tawny Frogmouth isn't actually an owl. Students also explored the Garden Detectives game on their iPads where they had to identify places where insects would be found and read about some simple facts about the insect. Students also continued to play the Bug Celebrity Heads game, guessing a chosen insect using questions.

The Grade 2/3 class created Bug Houses using a range of craft materials and plastic tubs. These will be placed into the garden to encourage bugs and insects to use them at their leisure.

The Grade 4 class further explored the topic of biodiversity and created a "Curiosity Box" which included items from the environment outside that are part of biodiversity. Students also collected photos of items in our biodiversity that were unable to be physically collected and placed into the box.

The Grade 5/6 class further explored animal adaptations and looked at images and videos of insects that have some pretty incredible ways to adapt to the environment around them.  Students worked in groups to match vocabulary terms to their definitions - this was an interesting activity as students were able to discuss the ones they knew about and wonder about those unknown terms. Further research was undertaken about different animal adaptations and the purpose of these adaptations for survival.
