SCIENCE
Stage 4 (Year 7 and 8)
Year 7 students were busy working hard on learning about separating mixtures. The students enjoyed applying their scientific knowledge of the Scientific Method to conduct various practical investigations. Students worked collaboratively to gain essential knowledge of subject content and skills. Year 8 students enjoyed learning about scientific skills, body systems, scientific discoveries and astronomy.
Stage 5 (Year 9 and 10)
Year 9 and 10 students concluded the year by learning about the ‘Earth and Universe’. Year 9 were engaged in learning about components of the universe and galaxies near and far far away!! Year 10 classes had an insightful time in Science by learning about our dynamic Earth.
Stage 6 (Year 11 and 12)
Year 11 - Chemistry, Biology and Investigating Science students started their first term of their Higher School Certificate. They have been extremely productive and were thoroughly engaged in completing their Assessment Tasks. Students are embracing the concepts of learning by collaborating, planning and conducting many hands-on activities in their lessons through working scientifically. Investigating Science students conducted a second-hand investigation on the work of Nobel Prize winning Australian scientists Marshall and Warren and their work on peptic ulcers. While Chemistry students modelled Equilibrium reactions, Biology students studied the process of polypeptide synthesis and DNA. They constructed outstanding models to demonstrate their knowledge and understanding of this important biological process.
Year 12 - Students completed their Higher School Certificate Examinations and we wish them the best of luck in their future endeavours.
The Science Faculty would like to take this opportunity to thank all students and their families in their resilience and hard work during online learning. It was surely a challenging time for everyone and thanks to our school community spirit, we overcame all challenges with enthusiasm and positivity. We wish everyone a safe and restful holiday period and we look forward to seeing everyone in 2022.
HSIE
Congratulations to all the HSIE Year 12 students for 2021 on the completion of their courses and all their hard work in preparation for the HSC Examinations. The HSIE Faculty wishes them all the best for their future careers.
The present Year 12 students have been working hard on their assessment tasks in each of the HSIE subjects. Year 7 students are enjoying completing their year of Big History studying the Expansion and Interconnection topic, which looks at how the human world expanded across the globe, learning new skills and knowledge by interconnecting with different cultures. This has included explorers, imperialism, trade and wars. Year 8 students are studying the Interconnections topic on tourism and trade, whilst researching the concept of ‘Fair Trade”. Year 9 have enjoyed the study of the World War 1 and Australia’s role and the impact it had on our nation. Year 10 have been learning about the environmental issues, including the causes and the impacts of climate change and ways to better manage the global environmental problems.
Muhammad of Year 12, 2021 undertook the History Extension course outside of his regular timetabled hours. The History Extension course is about the nature of history, and how and why historical interpretations are developed from different perspectives and approaches over time. It offers a higher level of challenge than the Ancient History and Modern History courses with its greater emphasis on historiography (which is the study of what people have written about history, rather than historical events themselves).
History Extension appeals to students who appreciate the intellectual challenge of grappling with an area of debate, and constructing and defending a position through a reasoned and cohesive argument. It offers students the opportunity to work independently and apply the historiographical understanding developed through the course to an individual project of personal interest.
From Mr Murphy:
It is without hyperbole that I say that Muhammad's project is the finest example of work from an Evans High School student that I have ever seen. In my opinion it is easily at advanced tertiary level and it will be entered into the History Teachers Association's annual Extension History Project Competition where it will be matched up against the best and brightest in the state (and personally based on the examples of previous winners, I think it will win). If you speak to Muhammad, please take the time to congratulate him on his efforts (and perfect score for the entire course). This project is the culmination of an entire year's worth of work and he deserves to be recognised for this.
Muhammad received a Certificate of Excellence for his work. To read Muhammad's project, click on the pdf below:
