Learning & Teaching

Learning and Teaching encompasses the following areas: Student Outcomes, Curriculum, Assessment, Reporting, Principles and Pedagogy.

LITERACY - Di Manthos

Macssis Survey - Thank you to all the families who completed the survey. This feedback goes towards improving and developing the St Fidelis school community. The results of the survey will be made available to the school by the end of the month. This will be discussed and analysed by the leadership team and staff. The voice of students, families and staff have all been represented through the survey.

Student Teachers from ACU - We are fortunate to have three students commencing this week for their five week teaching round. I'm confident they will be impressed with our learners and gain insight into the rewards  and demands of the teaching profession. We welcome Max in Foundation, Isabella in 3/4 and Clare in 1/2.

Literature & Take Home Books

Many take home books have been purchased recently for the Junior school as well as sets of Literature circle titles for Years 3-6.  We aim to continue replenishing our books in all areas of the school to allow different approaches to be developed even further. The 5/6 students were engaged in Literature Circle discussions during remote learning, an approach that develops the students as readers as they engage with rich literature and develop thinking beyond the text strategies.

Assessment & Reporting - Teachers are currently conducting post testing in Literacy & Numeracy. This information is used to plan future teaching and learning goals for the students and to monitor growth. There is evidence of gains and growth in our students. The strong partnership between the school and families during remote learning is evident. There are post assessments in literacy that are a requirement by Melbourne Archdiocese schools. We will be conducting Pat Reading and Pat Maths post assessments in the coming weeks. Classroom teachers are in reporting mode to complete the end of the year reports that will go out to families in the last week of term.

The St Fidelis Annual Sports Carnival for students from Foundation - Year 6 will be held on Thursday 2 December 2021. The venue will be St Fidelis Primary School.

ALL STUDENTS NEED TO WEAR SPORTS UNIFORM

HATS ARE COMPULSORY

If possible, the students can wear coloured socks, or coloured ribbon in their hair, on their hats or on their t-shirts to distinguish the teams apart.

It is advisable that students wear sunscreen. Sunscreen can be in the colours of the teams.

Please note that in the event of extreme weather conditions, the Sports Carnival will be cancelled.

There will be a timetable forwarded to parents / carers closer to this event so that you can attend if possible. COVID19 government restrictions will determine the regulations and requirements for visitors to attend this event.

NUMERACY NEWS - Colleen Monaghan

It is so good to be back teaching face to face and being able to see the children working through problems and tasks. Thank you to all the parents and students who managed to check in to all the Meets I ran over Lockdown, while it wasn’t what any of us wanted, the kids were amazing working remotely.

Since returning to school, I have worked with the Foundation students on recognising our Australian coins and playing shops where we use money to buy goods. The Foundation extension students have been surprising me with their ability to order the coins according to value, add the total of a handful of coins and match the amount of coins.

Here are a few photos of the great work they produced.

Our Australian Problem Solving Mathematics (APSMO) students sat there final Olympiad last week. The awards for this Olympiad will be announced later this month. We have had some great results with students scoring well and improving their own results each Olympiad.  Well done to all for your great persistence, risk taking and thinking. Congratulation Dante Surace for his perfect score in the last Olympiad test. An excellent way to end the competition.

Our Senior students have been working on measuring angles. We went outside and measured angles on the basketball court, and angles formed from our tennis ball rebounding off the wall.
