This week in literacy the Junior School explored the mentor text, 'The Curious Garden'.

While out walking one day, a boy named Liam discovers a struggling garden and decides to take care of it. As time passes, the garden spreads throughout the dark, grey city, transforming it into a lush, green world. The messages in the story provoked some fabulous discussions in the classroom and the children loved the beautiful illustrations.

Quality children’s literature such as ‘The Curious Garden’ and other rich mentor texts play an important role in sparking curiosity and create meaningful links to other learning areas. This text lends itself to our Inquiry focus and helps support student learning about how people are connected to their communities and how they can care for important places in our local environment.

Students enjoyed designing their own front cover for the text. They also completed a story map, detailing the characters, problem and solution; as well as identifying the traits of the main character.
