From the President

Mr Brad Canning (SVC 1997-2000)

It is very exciting to see a range of OVA events starting to come together as we approach the end of another Covid impacted year. The first day of the snap three day lockdown for Southern Tasmania coincided with the date for our 2021 Annual Dinner! How lucky, or possibly visionary, were the OVA Committee in postponing the Dinner?

I think we will agree on lucky!

The Golf Day on November 5 was simply amazing with over 140 players teeing up in perfect conditions at the Royal Hobart Golf Club. It was particularly pleasing to see some new players in attendance, particularly Old Virgilians from the 1990s, 2000s and 2010s. It augurs well for the future of the golf day and the Association overall.

Thanks to the hard work of committee members Zac Piesse and Declan Waddington our inaugural Friday drinks at the Maypole Hotel in New Town looks like being a huge success. It will be held on Friday November 19 from 5pm onwards and I encourage all Old Virgilians to get along, even if for a short time. Current and past teachers will also be in attendance. Re-connecting at such events opens up many more great opportunities to better service the needs of our members. So please get along to the Maypole!

Our final event for the year is the OVA Annual Mass and Luncheon. At this Mass we give thanks for the lives of Old Virgilians who have passed away in 2021 and join with the current group of Year 10 students to welcome to our ranks as old scholars of St Virgil's College. Our luncheon will follow this event, a highlight of which will be the posthumous induction of Gavin O'Dea to the OVA Heritage Roll of Honour.

Full details of the Mass and luncheon are detailed later in OVAtions.
