Year 3

Reading:

As one unit comes to an end and our last one for the year is about to begin, we celebrate how much our beautiful students in grade 3 have learned. They’ve made us giggle till our bellies hurt and ride an emotional rollercoaster with their use of tone and pitch whilst reading a vast range of poetry, they’ve discovered clues in poetry that have helped solve riddles and questions. This final week, we are going to see our students get creative in some fun poetry theatrics! Keep an eye out on See-Saw and join in the classroom fun as our students put all they’ve learned in one final performance! Let the shows begin!

‘I like figurative language and underlining the similes and metaphors. My favourite simile is, ‘as cool as a cucumber.’ I like reading lots of poetry like the Funny Monkey one!’ Kaan H, 3C.

‘My favourite was learning about similes because I like comparing different stuff!’ – Miley T, 3C.

‘I liked reading poetry using tone, pitch and rhythm. My favourite poems to read were quatrain poems!’ – Jamila E-N, 3C.

Writing:

As we come to an end of our poetry unit, students have enjoyed writing and publishing their work. Students have had to understand that not all poetry rhymes and have enjoyed delving into the different types of poetry. Students have had to follow certain structures and have enjoyed creating, Limericks, Shape/Concrete, Quatrain, Haiku, Acrostic and 5 senses poems. Make sure you check out their anthology of poetry!

‘I’ve liked the poems that we created, my favourite poem to create was the shape poem.’ Chloe 3A

'Poetry has been fun. I love how we have to rhyme some of the poems. I learnt that not all poetry has to rhyme. I enjoyed learning about the patterns that quatrain poems have.’ Hemil 3A

‘What I like about poetry is learning about new topics and having fun while writing.’ Josh 3A

‘One thing that I have really enjoyed in poetry is the Limericks poems. I liked the pattern used to form them. I also loved writing about our own topics.’ Manny 3A

Maths:

We are so happy to be back onsite and learning from our classroom! The past few weeks in maths we have continued to learn about place value and problem solving and we have also been learning about length.  Below are some examples of the fantastic work students have been doing.

Year 4

What’s been happening

It has been wonderful to see everyone back at school and the Year 4s have had a seamless transition back to onsite learning. We thank all of our students and their families for their effort and persistence during this last lockdown period. The big news in Year 4 is that CAMP is going ahead and the countdown is now on in earnest until we head off to The Summit on November 17. Those students not attending camp will be doing an alternate program of fun activities at school.

We have been exploring a range of poetry in our reading and writing sessions, including Cinquain, Haiku, Free Verse and Conrete Poems. We also looked in detail at poetic devices such as rhythm, rhyme, repetition, alliteration, hyperbole, puns, neologisms and nonsense words.

Year 5

Writing

After just returning to school after weeks of remote schooling, we continued on with our poetry writing. We had been exploring all the different types of poetry and experimented with writing our own. We focused specifically on writing our own slam poems which we would have to present to our class. Firstly we practised writing some then performing them in partners which was fun! Then we had to start planning our very own slam poem. We had to decide on a worldly issue/problem that we were passionate about such as climate change, pollution, racism, littering. We thoroughly enjoyed researching then writing these poems.

Reading

In year 5 we have been learning about the different types of question that we can be asked when reading or watching a text type. So far we have learnt about the categories which are within the text, beyond the text and about the text. Within the text questions are when the answer is right in the text Eg why was____sad? Beyond the text questions include inferring and you may need to read the text for more clues Eg what do you think _____ was feeling after____? About the text questions include a lot more analysing and critiquing Eg what did the author include to make the text more interesting.
