5/6 B

Term 4 Week 7

Week 7 already, it's hard to believe really! With just over 20 school days remaining for the students for 2021, we can begin to cast our eye towards the end of the year and 2022. Over the coming weeks it's really important that all students are at school as much as possible. Illness aside, we'd hate to think students missed some important school events because they were away.  The Year 5s have begun their 2022  Leadership prearations and the Year 6s have also begun their Graduation preparation. There is plenty to look forward to, so stay tuned for some exciting news ahead.

Literacy

As part of our Inquiry unit on Change, the Year 5/6s are researching a local, state or federal issue and writing persuasive letters to Members of Parliament outlining their concerns. We looked at what persuasive letters need to contain and how to address such letters. We brainstormed many different issues across the three levels of government and each student chose an issue that resonates with them. It's been fabulous to see the students concerned with issues relating to their local area or bigger issues that concern our state or country.

Maths

In Maths we have continued our fractions and decimals unit. This past week we have looked at place value (tenths, hundredths and thousandths), rounding decimals up or down and ordering decimals on a number line. Next week we will start our final number unit for the year which will be algebra.

Inquiry / RE

The children have really enjoyed participating in our scripted role plays for Inquiry learning. This past week they have participated in two role plays to help us learn about the decision making process that goes into local council issues. Next week we will be doing a State and Federal Parliamentary debate.

Local Council Role Play

This role play involves the class acting out a scripted role play of an agenda item at a local council meeting. Through this role play students explore the role of the local representative, the relevance of local government in their lives, processes of decision making and the accountability of decision makers.

Public Meeting Role Play

This role play involves the class acting out a scripted role play of concerned citizens attending a public meeting. Participants debate the merits of various motions put to the meeting. Students use this role play to explore the concepts of representation, active citizenship and democracy. It also allows them to experience the procedures of a public meeting and accessible forum for influencing decision makers in the community.

High School Transition

Last Tuesday the Year 6s gathered for an online incursion with our friends at Frankston Youth Services. This is one the many opportunities provided to the Year 6s to help them prepare for the move into high school next year.

Soccer uniforms

Thank you to all the students and families who have returned their soccer uniforms so they can be used next year. If you haven't already done so, please make sure the uniform is washed and returned to school as soon as possible.

Stay well, stay safe!

Brendan and Judy.
