                                                                             Geometry

This week for our Geometry unit, we have been focusing on classifying 2D shapes. Students used geo sticks to create 2D shapes and then had to classify them according to their features (e.g. sides, corners, name). The following lesson, we began looking at different angles that we can see in 2D shapes, for example right angles, acute angles and obtuse angles. Students then had to use this new knowledge to further help them classify their shape. For our Algebra unit, we've been looking at identifying patterns and rules that describe the pattern. Patterns can be described using words as well as by writing numerical sentences. The students have been challenged to find ways to transfer their written rules into mathematical terms.

Literacy

It has been so fabulous to be back in the classroom and to finally get back into reading groups! The wolves have been working hard on making inferences. This is where they use their prior knowledge and clues from the text to infer what is happening.

The meerkats have started a new topic where they are learning to synthesize. This comprehension strategy is where students recall any prior knowledge of a certain topic and note any new information found in a text. They then combine the prior knowledge and new information to form an insight about a topic. Writing used poetry to investigate the use of words to convey meaning, choosing just the right word for the occasion. We looked at how word 'play' can add interest to our writing. By writing using alliteration (words whose initial sound is the same) we can add emphasis. Here are some great examples from our class.

Inquiry

SCIENCE FAIR

Our topic for our inquiry unit has been about change. Over the past fortnight, the students have been working really hard to come up with a science experiment that they needed to explain and present. Over two days all of the students presented their experiment to both classes and some of the 1/2s. The students did such a fantastic job and we were so proud of the effort that they put in.

                                   The Learning Pit

We have been exploring this new concept called the learning pit.

It is a place that students will be once they have a series of unresolved questions due to thinking deeply about a certain topic. To be in the 'pit' can be challenging for students, however we want our students to understand that good learners do go into the pit. When facing challenges in learning, students are often faced with a decision to stay within their comfort zone or extend themselves to solve the problem. Being in the pit allows students to think more deeply about a problem and use strategies to get themselves out.

Education in Faith

Over the past fortnight we have been looking at the way other people pray in different religions. Students were put into groups to research another faith and to compare and contrast it against our catholic faith. Students really enjoyed finding out about the different ways that people pray. Over the coming weeks, students will have the opportunity to share a class Morning Prayer with the rest of the school. We look forward to what the students produce.

First Communion

A big congratulations to the students who made their First Communion last weekend. It was such a proud moment for the teachers and we were so glad that we finally got there.
