LITERACY

As part of our Inquiry unit on change, the students have all identified an area of concern and brainstormed ways to address them. They have researched their topic and are writing letters to a member of Parliament or a local council member. Some of the issues include:

  • Litter on the beach
  • deforestation
  • maintaining local parks and paths

MATHS

Over the last two weeks we have continued our unit on fractions and decimals. The students have enjoyed playing a variety of games to build and demonstrate their knowledge on this topic.

INQUIRY

The children have really enjoyed participating in our scripted role plays for Inquiry learning. This past week they have participated in two role plays to help us learn about the decision making process that goes into local council issues.

Local Council Role Play

This role play involves the class acting out a scripted role play of an agenda item at a local council meeting. Through this role play students explore the role of the local representative, the relevance of local government in their lives, processes of decision making and the accountability of decision makers.

Public Meeting Role Play

This role play involves the class acting out a scripted role play of concerned citizens attending a public meeting. Participants debate the merits of various motions put to the meeting. Students use this role play to explore the concepts of representation, active citizenship and democracy. It also allows them to experience the procedures of a public meeting and accessible forum for influencing decision makers in the community.
