Hi! I'm Luka, an Irish Year 11 student with a passion for studying foreign languages. I've been studying French for over four years now and have thoroughly enjoyed it. Immersing yourself in different cultures and exploring traditions from around the world is incredibly important! At a time of abundant war and despair, intercultural and foreign language studies are an amazing way to bring us all together. I highly encourage everyone to study a language at school or outside of school to explore how truly diverse we are as a species!

What is your first language?

English

Where did you learn a language or languages other than your first language?

I learnt a little Irish through family growing up and took French in high school, then Spanish at University. I picked up a little Turkish from friends too. After I graduated, I lived in Japan for a few years and ended up living close to a large Brazilian community there, thus beginning my long relationship with Portuguese. After I met my wife we moved to Brazil for a few years before returning to Japan and then Australia.

Why did you learn that or those particular languages?

I’ve always found that languages are a wonderful way of connecting with others. Even in our native language we are always learning new words and expressions, I always tend to collect phrases that help me connect with others.

What advice would you give to students wanting to improve their ability in the language(s) they are studying?

Use it. Whether it be with people or in movies, music or even video games, find ways to increase your exposure to the language. Learning a language is always a journey, never a destination and patience is a great thing to have. Slowly, but surely, you will improve your language skills if you stick with it.

Why do you think it is important to study a language?

To learn a new language is to acquire a new way of seeing the world and connecting with other people. It also helps us to improve our memory and intercultural understanding, as well as enhancing our understanding of our native language(s).

Why did you choose to become a language teacher?

I enjoy teaching in general; every day is different! Teaching languages is almost like helping someone else discover something great, every lesson I get to help students build skills that are applicable to any career option they choose!

Is there anything else you would like to add?

“We should learn languages because language is the one thing worth knowing even poorly...Solely in the world of languages is the amateur of value. Well-intentioned sentences full of mistakes can still build bridges between people”.  ~ Kató Lomb
