2020 VCE Results

Our 2020 graduating class, after a year of additional challenges and trials, finally received their VCE results on 28 December (around 2 weeks later than normal).  As with any group of graduating students, a number of them performed exceptionally well and some will be a little disappointed to not have achieved what they were aiming for. Overall, we are very proud of what our class of 2020 has been able to achieve throughout their time at HCC and in their final results. This year’s results are difficult to accurately compare with other year’s since, due to the changed circumstances presented in 2020, all VCE students in Victoria were able to apply for ‘special consideration’ which, when considered by VCAA and applied to a student’s Study Score, can have had some effect on their score. Given all students were eligible to apply for this, it is an unknown effect just what impact this may have had on their final outcomes.

We want to particularly congratulate Sandra Saad who was our Dux for 2020. Sandra has been a student at HCC since she was in Prep and has really grown as a student and a person of faith, humility and persistence during her time with us. Sandra will be undertaking a Bachelor of Biomedicine at Melbourne University, to be followed by post-graduate studies in Dentistry. Well done to Sandra and our Class of 2020.

Comment on our VCE results

These results are consistent with our results in past years. We are a non-selective school meaning that we encourage all of our students to pursue their VCE and will support them in working to maximise their academic results. We encourage our Year 10 students to take on the challenge of a VCE subject which can enable them to achieve an extra subject as well as experience a Unit 3 & 4 subject in Year 11. Our cohort of VCE students always comprises a diverse mix of abilities, passions, interests and directions. This is reflected in the diverse range of choices made by our students to go to a University, TAFE, private institute, straight into the workforce or even taking a gap year to further explore options. An important measure of success for us is to value and seek to develop students holistically – hence it is not just a student’s final ATAR and study score, but whether they have been successful in gaining entry to their desired choice of course, study or work, have a clear sense of their giftings and purpose, are people of Godly character, and are growing in their faith – this is so much more than a number (e.g. ATAR). And the numbers never tell the story of a student’s journey and growth.

In saying all of this, we continue to strive to improve the academic outcomes for our students. Our VCE teachers reflect on their students’ outcomes and are supported to seek improvement in their subject knowledge and teaching. We are committed to improving!

We will be presenting a further picture of these outcomes and where our students are heading this year at our upcoming Parent Information evening on Wednesday night, 3 February.
