Environmental Studies - Course Selection Options

Sustainability, agriculture and the environment include industries that are growing at a fast rate. This provides an opportunity for students to learn more about these topics and consider them for their future studies at Aitken. Subjects offered within the Environmental Studies faculty provide students the opportunity to learn about Environmental concepts and industries in a fun and practical way.

The following diagram shows the progression of subjects offered as electives in Years 9 and 10 and how they progress into VCE options for Year 11 and 12 students.

It is important for students to experience a variety of different subjects as they progress through the middle years. Years 9 and 10 provide perfect opportunities to get a taste of what each subject has to offer, before VCE and VCAL selections are made in Senior School. If your child enjoys working outdoors in a practical environment, we encourage them to give the Environmental Studies electives a try.

Monday 10 August is the deadline for Year 10 students to make their 2021 course selections, so students still have time to consider VCE Environmental Studies subjects, particularly if students are undecided on a 6th subject or are unsure of a specific career path to pursue. VCE Environmental Science and VCE Agriculture each provide skills and experiences applicable to a wide range of interests and industries. For example, in VCE Agriculture, students run their own business as part of the course, so students interested in a Business career would greatly benefit by taking part in VCE Agriculture in terms of applying for jobs and universities. Likewise, VCE Environmental Science includes legal and political topics, as well as principles of Energy, which means it could support career pathways like Law and Civil Engineering. These are just a couple of examples of how VCE Agriculture and VCE Environmental Science are applicable across a wide spectrum of pathways. Above all, students should choose subjects they enjoy. Please visit the related My Aitken pages, (Visit VCE Agriculture and VCE Environmental Science), to see photos and quotes from past and present students, as well as to see sample Year 11 course selections for a variety of career paths.
