Camp Australia

From Merwin and myself, welcome back to school everyone! I hope everyone had a safe school holidays, and that we continue staying safe and healthy as we head into Term 3!

It’s no lie that times are uncertain, what with our situation changing week to week (and almost day to day), but I can’t help but be excited looking down the calendar to National

Science Week in August. I’ve got some great plans for activities that week.

Attendance numbers being what they have been lately, board games have definitely taken front and centre at OSHCare. And why shouldn’t they? Board games are great, not only for passing the time but also for learning in a fun and inclusive manner.  Chance and probability; identifying and utilizing patterns; strategic thinking are all key skills that can be learnt when playing a board game.  Last week’s feature game, Settlers of Catan , is a great example of all of these learning opportunities and was an absolute smash-hit!

We also did some extremely successful cooking, whipping up a batch of banana bread & coconut muffins that went down a treat! Want to have a go at making them? I’ll leave the recipe down below. Cooking’s another great social activity with a lot of hidden learning opportunities (numeracy, literacy, measurements, volume and so on!). Plus you usually don’t get to eat your Literacy or Numeracy work after you finish it!

Any of these sound right up your child’s alley? How about active group games? Arts & crafts? Reading? Dress-up?  When your child is at OSCH we’ll do our best to accommodate their interests!

All the best!

Here is our Banana Bread recipe with some chef's notes: We used about 3 bananas total, and chose to blend them in a blender with about ⅛ cup of milk, we swapped the golden syrup for honey, we didn't add baking soda (since we didn’t have any!).  Once done, we put the mixture into a (lightly greased) muffin tray using ¼ cup scoops, and they were done

baking after about 35 minutes. This yielded 11 muffins.
