Week 4
Did I mention Spring last newsletter? Winter has really asserted itself lately … and what better weather for reading?
When reading becomes a habit, it helps nurture our love for language, knowledge and vocabulary.
Through the imagination of creators, our own imaginations flourish.
Through the eyes of characters we read about, our capacity to feel compassion and relate to challenges and triumphs deepens.
It’s the word ‘vocabulary’ I want to pick up on now. Our ability to express ourselves is tied to the bank of words that we feel comfortable using as we express our wants and needs, our ideas and dreams, our challenges, pain and joy.
We might choose a book because we like the cover, or because it’s one of a series we like, or it may be set in a time or place that draws our interest. We don’t usually choose a book for its vocabulary BUT that’s a bonus that comes with reading. The more we read, the more we reach out for a wider choice. And, with time, the more our reading, speaking and writing word-banks grow.
I’m hoping the habit of reading … a page here, a chapter there, a shared joke or amazing fact … will burrow right into our young people’s lives so they can grow and enjoy benefits beyond the pages of individual books.
As always, Happy Reading!

PREMIER’S READING CHALLENGE
Only 3 weeks to go until the end of 2020 Premier’s Reading Challenge!
The following students have handed in their completed forms since the last Newsletter: Mitchell, Evelyn, Laura, Maddison, Billy & Jake. WELL DONE!
As you can see, we have a way to go on our Progress Thermometer to reach, and exceed our previous record. We need at least 62 students to hand in their completed forms in the next 3 weeks!
Come on Tyndalians…lets finish strong and beat our record!
