Student Wellbeing

Here to Support You

Children and young people come to school with a ‘backpack’ of many experiences, backgrounds, and things happening in their lives.  We know they do not just let go of this at the school gate.  Sometimes the emotional load impacts on concentration, relationships with peers, and mental health.  We are here to support students and encourage parents/carers/students to get in touch with the wellbeing team by phone, a teacher, student services or email: WellbeingStrathalbyn@tyndale.sa.edu.au

A common experience for many students is being a young carer.  Statistically, we know that in Australia on average, there are two or three students in each classroom who are young carers.

Young carers are people up to 25 years old who provide unpaid care and support to a family member or friend with a disability, a physical or mental illness, a substance dependency, or who is aged.

There are 235,300 carers under the age of 25 in Australia, which equates to around 1 in 11 people of that aged group. The person they care for may be a parent, partner, sibling, their own child, other relative or friend.

Many young carers emphasise that caring is a positive experience. However, research clearly indicates that, when inadequately supported, their own health, mental health and wellbeing can be seriously affected.

If you are a young carer or want to know more about young carers, visit the Young Carers Network- a place for young carers to learn about support services, access resources and share their story and opinions.  (source: https://www.carersaustralia.com.au/about-carers/young-carers2/)

The Young Carer Bursary Program supports young carers to return to or continue with their education. The program offers a limited number of $3,000 bursaries each year.

Applications for Young Carer Bursary Program 2021 open from: 28 July to 8 September 2020.
