In Week 4, Kindergarten learned about echidnas. They read lots of books throughout the week including Puggle, Echidnas can't Cuddle and an Aboriginal dreaming book called The Echidna and The Shade Tree. Kindergarten learned that Short-beaked Echidnas are mammals and females lay a single egg which takes 11 days before it hatches. Baby echidnas are called puggles, and they grow in the mother's pouch. As adults, Short-beaked Echidnas are covered with spines. They live in Australia and can live in a range of habitats from deserts to forests. Kindergarten think echidnas are really cute and in math, they recognised that an echidna is on the 5 cent coin. For art, kindergarten enjoyed making echidnas out of clay and they used toothpicks to make the spikes.

This year at Guyra Central School introduced the VIVO Rewards system to manage the 7 – 12 positive rewards Snowburst system. The VIVO system allows teachers to rewards students with Snowburst/VIVO points electronically. The students receive the positive recognition for doing the right thing through their VIVO account and can then redeem the points that they have earned through the VIVO Shop which has prizes from the VIVO people but also rewards provided by the school. This is a great initiative aimed at recognising those students who consistently follow the school PBL expectations of Pride, Respect & Responsibility.
Congratulation's to Year 10 student, Naomi Hartas-Berry who is the first of our secondary students to redeem her VIVO points ! Naomi earned enough VIVO points to score herself one of our new secondary hoodies from the uniform shop. Congratulation's Naomi!
During the unit on First Aid, Year 11 PDHPE students applied their knowledge of managing injuries. Students practised bandaging techniques for a variety of arm injuries as well as penetrating injuries and head injuries.
Mathematics -The students have been delving into multiplication and linking this to area. We have been playing lots of games such as multiplication concentration and domino squares to extend our knowledge of numbers and multiplication.
Some students found the area of the letters in their names. Some students also worked on visual proofs related to more difficult multiplication problems. This involved proving the answer to the sum in four different ways. Congratulations to the students on their deep thinking.
In other news, the students have been researching which bird builds the best nest. Here are some of our speeches:
Some students also noticed a magpie who is building a nest in one of trees in the staff car park so we are keeping a close eye on it to see the finished product.
In reading groups, the students are really engaging well with an online reading program, Epic! There are thousands of books in this program that students can read and listen to. Some of the texts have a quiz at the end of the book to test the students' understanding. In addition to this, the students have been listening to the ABC's Short and Curly podcasts for kids. This involves the two presenters answers challenging questions from children all over Australia and even overseas. https://www.abc.net.au/radio/programs/shortandcurly/

Over the weekend, Mr Miller competed in the Colin Say & Co Led Steer Extravaganza in Glen Innes with 4 school steers. Unfortunately due to COVID-19 restrictions, students were unable to attend. (So Mr Miller had a nice and relaxing weekend... HAHA )
It was a highly competitive event as it has been one of the only cattle competitions across Australia in recent months. So this meant that cattle who were destined for other events such as Wingham beef week, Casino beef week and the EKKA were all in attendance due to the cancellation of those events.
The school steers were all in excellent condition and received positive feedback on their quality.
Quincey, a 660kg Murray Grey steer, who was bred at school, was an absolute crowd pleaser and gained plenty of praise from the judges and other producers who were keen to learn more about his breeding pedigree.
We now wait to learn the results from the carcase section over the coming days. A big thank you to Mr Terry Williams for assisting with the transportation of the cattle to the event.
I would also like to take this opportunity before I leave to take up a position at Glen Innes High School next term, to thank all of those people who have assisted me in creating a diverse and exciting environment at the school farm. I firmly believe we have successfully immersed students in valuable learning opportunities in the realms of Agriculture. To all the people who have helped with tasks such as sourcing and donating livestock, excursion and event organisation and sharing skills, knowledge and expertise, your assistance has been very much appreciated.
I look forward to keeping in touch in the future!
Signing off for the last time
